The word enslaved is unnecessarily inflammatory to some here.
We have what is called a 13th Amendment. A worker who willingly indentures him or herself and labors against future productivity to repay a company that goes into debt for this worker is absolutely legal and specifically NOT enslavement.
Neither slavery or involuntary servitude shall exist anywhere in the USA or its associated colonies etc without having already been convicted as part of a crime.
Now the old style work situation of Indentured For a period of 7 years or whatever it was back in the Colonial Days of America (around 1580 through 1790 roughly) that does not exist anymore. If a parent would hand a child to a employer before age of adulthood would probably see that same parent arrested today.
Workers who voluntarily sign a promissary note borrowing money to repay later either by work completed over time or instantly due and payable in full if dismissed, quit, fired with or without cause etc, sick and unable to continue and who knows what else.
I did not think that this was a real problem in my time. You got Uncle Sam to hand you 2500 dollars or whtaever it was and went to school to get that CDL. Once you had that CDL then your future belongs to you. However you can succeed or fail. It's up to you.
Now.
The recent 15 years or so.. I have begun to consider a theory that companies that gin up mountains of BS in legalese to bind workers to serious amounts of money to get training that really does not amount to a hill of beans at today's commodity pricing.
I think the companies have found a way to legally take a worker who is not too bright and is in need of mommy or pop pop to hold his or her hands and sign some papers to now be indebited to said company who is raking in mountains of money. Who cares if 10,000 trainees did not successfully complete the final road test prior to hiring? They all probably collectively owe more due and payable today than you would see all year with 10,000 trailers running revenue freight all over the USA every day.

Yea I hate these big companies who aren't honest or actually lie to these young adults to get them reeled into a major debt that most of them have no clue what their getting into because they aren't informed by these companies. I know several of them who had to end up filing bankruptcy to resolve their personal nightmare. Been told that a certain company makes you go directly to the office and makes you sign a contract right after you get off the bus.
Oh and speaking of bus what about this trick they pull on people they call bus and dump? Yea that's right that's where the company tells you to come on in your good to go and then you get there and they inform you there's a problem and we can't accept you good luck in your future and getting back home.
SMH!!!!! -
Major debt?
Give me a break.
If they are filing bankruptcy, then they have other issues than trucking and trucking is their desperation move to get their life fixed.Jazz1, Aamcotrans, jammer910Z and 1 other person Thank this. -
You aren't a slave. Just quit and go somewhere else....
Sure, they might want thier money, so what. The other places want thier money too.
Do you want to bail with "some" experience and a CDL, or no experience and a CDL. How much did thoes two choices cost, what's the difference between them?
Tell you what. Company training knows you will be driving thier trucks. The other places won't care, not thier problem anymore. What does that say? -
What’s the issue with company training? You’re going out with their trainer regardless, and the cost is the same or less.
Find a company that pays a good rookie CPM and buckle up the first year. However, use the smallest Megan you can find.
You will lose more money getting a company physical than you will driving for a year. -
Wow it's pretty obvious we have ATA mega carrier trolls on this site what a shame!!!
Don't be fooled by these people their the very ones that spend all the big bucks paying off the government to implement all the crippling overbearing regulations this industry has suffered over the past several years. They play it off by saying they support it to "LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD" but the truth is it was all about putting the small companies and independent operators out of business. The only way to level the playing field would be for everyone to own 5,000 or 10,000 trucks like they do so it's all a lie. -
I'm mostly scared how I'm supposed to pay bills at home. I should be a great candidate. I'm divorced. My kids are grown. I know I love driving because I uber for hours. I drove 12 hours to get my suspension fixed in my car. I like driving. But i don't know how I'm going to drop having an income to get started. It doesn't seem possible.

Well you may qualify for a grant just like I did back in 2008 being a single father the state paid for me to go to school on weekends while I worked my full time job during the week. Now that my daughter is grown I got rid of my condo 2 years ago and basically live in my truck out on the road I stay with family or get a hotel when I want to come home for a visit but I've saved a ton of money. If you cannot qualify for a grant and cannot afford the $6000 for private truck driving school you can go to a company that provides free training if you sign a 12 month contract to work for them. They provide lodging and at least 2meals a day while your at their facility getting trained.

I understand not everyone can qualify for the grants to attend a private driver training school and if you absolutely had no other choice to go to a trucking company for your training plus work for them for a year on a contract basis I've heard the best 2 are Roehl and Prime.
