I leave for truck driving school in less than two weeks and my family is freaking out because i'm a single 42 yr old female. I'm the type of person who believes in living out my dreams cause life is too short to say " Man, I wish I had done that" I'm an only child and my parents rely very heavily on me. They are getting older and when they pass I have to have a job that will support me.I'm from a small town with no job opportunities. I can barely pay my bills and i'm tired of it. I can't even look forward to this exciting opportunity because everytime I bring it up my mom bursts into tears. I feel 12 again. It is really that dangerous for a woman out there now? I teamed with my ex about 9 yrs ago but since he was with me my family didnt worry so much. I am going to use common sense and be cautious at truck stops and stay to myself when I can but how can I convince my family i'm going to be o.k. I'm so stressed out over this!! Any advice will be greatly appreciated:biggrin_25526:

You'll be just as safe out there as in your own home. There are some threads here about 'bad' truckstops-read those and avoid those stops. Lock your doors at night.
Just about any place you go,you'll have 20-30 truckers right there to help you. Tell your mom to relax!!

Well, it's been almost a decade since I was out there, but coming from a 5'2" retired female driver, I never felt unsafe out there. I don't know if it has changed or not, but while I was on the road the vast majority of the drivers out there looked out for the lady drivers, treated them like they were their sisters/daughters/mothers.

There were a few idiots out there, but the decent drivers shut the idiots down pretty quick.

I'm sure that some of our lady drivers that are out there currently will pop in with more up-to-date info for ya too.

While it is more dangerous for a woman than a man, it isn't THAT bad like they want to think. I know MANY women truckers and they do just fine and have been on the road as a trucker for many years.

First thing is, it depends on how you live your life and carry yourself. IF you run around the parking lot wanting to hook up with other truckers (party, etc.) then hell yes it would be dangerous.

Other than that if you do your job, act decent, don't run around with your butt hanging out of short shorts or something, you'll be just FINE! It isn't like many years ago. Trust me, you take care and use your head, you'll be FINE! Run around loosely and that will be another story around horny truckers!

    GL! Follow your dreams!

It'a not dangerous unless you put yourself in a situation where it could be.

Be alert to your surroundings and watch all around you when out of the truck.

I never let my guard down or trusted anyone. I know that sounds cold, but it worked for the 5 years I was out on the road.

I was nice when spoken to but that's as far as a conversation went.

Always watch your back and then some.

With that said; YOU can do it, if you put your mind to the job.

    Good Luck!:biggrin_25519:

Always avoid sleeping at a shipper or consignee's business unless you're familiar with the place, neighborhood and there is more trucks there. Best to plan your sleep areas in truck stops, ones that are open 24 hours. Always park as close to the front of the parking lot as possible. Never give your location and truck description over the CB. A lot of undesirable four wheelers are in the parking lots and surrounding areas. Stay to yourself unless your running with a co-worker. It's not bad out here, as long as you do your job and remember the job comes first. Just exercise common sense and you'll be fine.

I have seen women truckers walking in from their truck and will try to keep them in sight to the truck stop. If I see them on the way out, I try to make sure they get to their truck or what truck they go to.

I observe where I am at and believe they are working too.

Just walk tall, lock your doors at night or whenever you're at a truck stop for that matter, and always always be aware of your sorroundings. Also would try to make a habbit of not parking in a major metropolis truckstop or large city thats where I have found the truckstops to be crappy and a little freaky, any small towns though you should be ok, also I wouldnt make a habbit of talking on the cb to much just to many jerks out there wanting to be dirty or just plain rude. But if you need directions or help you can usually find a decent person to help. But go for it its definately a trip and fun.. at times and it can be challenging at time also but its worth it!

That's not cold cybergal, that's intelligent. And very good advice for any driver, male or female.
