've been working entry level in my field for 4 years now, living paycheck to paycheck because of student loans. Everything above my position requires a graduate degree, which I can't afford due to the aforementioned loans.
I've been doing research into how much a CDL driver makes and have been getting mixed answers. Seems the median gross is about 42k which is roughly what I want to make pre tax. I've seen ads on Craigslist offer CDL jobs that pay 60-70k that require 6 months to a year of driving experience. Is that too good to be true, or is that actually feasible?
I don't want to be stuck paying my student loans ($900 a month) for the next 10 years, which is what I'm looking at with my current job. Is it feasible to earn in the 80-100k range by year 3 assuming I don't need any home time and am willing to work the maximum allowed number of hours? Also how much of a difference does it make if you own your own cab, is the net over maintenance and insurance significantly higher?
Thanks in advance for advice.

Location? Good question. Prior to March I was living in Florida with my parents until my company tranftransf me to Illinois, in the Chicago area. I still have Florida driver's license because I rent a room month to month and don't want to commit. As long as I'm a nomad I don't really care where on the country the company is. I heard rates for CDL drivers are high in Illinois but Florida has fewer regulations, so if it were one of those I wouldn't be sure which to pick.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Where did you live in Florida; which town/city?
All trucking companies do hair follicle drug test or urine drug test.
To pass urine test, need to be clean 90 days.
To pass hair follicle test, need to be clean 12 months.
Most really high paying jobs will do hair follicle drug test.

It's feasible to make $80G a year WITHOUT living on the road. You just need experience.
Heavy Haul, Tankers, etc. The good paying jobs aren't suually advertised though, so they're hard to find. And usually have good steady people. Which makes it even hard to get signed on.
However, Flying J is advertising, and Walmart. One would be local. The other isn't. -
Made 65k in my first year of trucking at Prime flatbed in 2014. Once you get a couple years of clean record, job hopping free experience, you can find a 80k+ job fairly easily. That's were I'm at now and I'm doing that on dry van. If I wanted to keep doing flatbed, there's even more money in that segment.
Like you, I went to school to do something else professionally. IT. I worked in the field for three years and my salary was 32k, 34k and 35k in those years until I made I change. Still paying those student loans every month at $760 a pop. Sucks.VIDEODROME and Chinatown Thank this.
