Hello all, just graduated from CDL Truck School in Phoenix, and looking for my first CDL job. A businessman friend I know wants to invest in a hotshot trucking business, buying a new heavy pickup + 40 ft trailer to run under another small hotshot company, and wants me to drive. I was also looking at another company, Contract Driver Services, hiring entry-level CDL's. It's for a 3 month position, 10 hrs a day, $18/hr w\ no experience, and the hours are at night.
Here's my quick background - currently I own a small computer repair shop (for 8+ years), running pretty much solo, making about $500/wk before taxes. I eventually want to owner-operate in the trucking business, to make better money while I still can (I am 53 yrs old).
My question is, which of these opportunities should I pursue?
The pros and cons of hotshot
- Small company, they would work closely with me to get experience to do trucking
-Not operating a semi, easier work than heavy haul, less stress ?
-Can expect around $1000/wk , percentage of load and 1099
-OTR-style position, might be out a week at a time, definitely would have to close my computer business
The pros and cons of entry-level CDL hourly position
- They accept entry level as well, and for 10-hr nighttime shifts - so might be able to run computer shop and do truck work
- Position requires doubles endorsement, so assuming its a tractor-trailer vehicle - maybe better type of experience for other trucking work?
Sorry for the long post, but want to make a wise decision, and I'm torn between keeping my company and doing night-time trucking (maybe not realistic?) or jumping into an OTR-style position, albeit not running a semi.
Any advice would be appreciated. I've learned a ton reading all the different forums here, and respect a lot of the advice I have gotten. Thanks in advance!
New grad - try hotshot, or go tractor-trailer?

I wouldn’t work on 1099 and only be making 1,000 a week. After taxes you’ll be right where you are now
larry2903, FryDaddy, Crude Truckin' and 1 other person Thank this. -
Go with the tractor trailer.
And forget running you computer business. The last thing you want, is to be involved in an accident. And some nosy ### lawyer finding out about your day job.
Game over.FryDaddy, Crude Truckin' and Chinatown Thank this. -
Which company is the hourly job with; a temp service?
If I were you, I'd get with an established company that has a benefits package and some type of pension plan; even a 401k can do wonders.Rugerfan and Crude Truckin' Thank this. -
Central Transport - in Phoenix sometimes hires new cdl grads. I've seen ads that state they hire new grads from approved cdl schools.

Thanks all, especially Chinatown - seems the hotshot job would be a poor first choice. Here's a link to the Contract Driver Services job I was considering. . .
Entry Level CDL A Drivers Needed
I suspect the CDL Truck School is not a highly-accredited outfit, as their training is only 7 days - but a lot cheaper, at $1500.
In searching out there, I am finding some places that will take you with 3 mos experience, a lot more if you have 6 mos. The Contract Driver Services job offers $19/hr with 3 mos experience, $20/hr with more than 3 mos.
I will post what I find, and what I finally pick. -
R&L Carriers - has started hiring entry-level drivers.
Pay is $2000.00 weekly. Team job & each driver is paid $2000.00 weekly.
No experience, 25 years old, school certificate and accompanied with a certified trainer.
