Where to start if I want to end up teaming with my husband?

Fresh out of school and I have offers from a few different places, one in tankers, others reg/OTR straight TT. Tankers would be lucrative coming right out of school, however, my husband is thinking of learning next summer and then we would team up.

Would it be wise for my first gig to learn box trucks and docking rather than tank if I plan on teaming in a year? Or does that not matter?

If it matters, I'm in Chicago and best offers are:
    Superior - tanker
    Nussbaum - OTR box
Dot Foods - (drop and hook) refer
Lily - dedicated PA to CA produce run refer

All promise home time 1x or more a week.

Honestly Lily would be my first choice but they passed me over on a Chicago-Toronto Whole Foods team for this CA run instead, which doesn't sound ideal.

    Always appreciate your advice!

go for as many miles as you can get in short time....that PA to CA sounds like good miles and pay and before you know it, your husband can be with you

I should correct myself, not all are offers but I'm well in to the process and nearing the end and need to decide as some of these folks are waiting on my response

Box trucks imply a Fuso or Hino 18 foot box.

You should know those things are no good for trucking. If you two wanna team, understand that there are companies that will pay a five figure bonus for husband wife teams. Ive heard rumors of 50,000 dollar payouts.. but it's just a wild fantasy of someone too imbibed with the french coffee mix at the lunch counter.

You two think you know each other. But both of you will learn more about each other, limitations and so on. You must wherever you go to work insist on dispatch allowing you one day per week to do nothing. That is to catch up on your laundry, eat two good meals that are complete with no rush or hurry and disinfect your tractor's interior with 10% bleach. (Two humans in a space the size of a walk in closet can become seriously infectious and dirty in ways you cannot imagine in a short time) And a period of time off weekly allows you two to decompress before the next run.

    Two things.

1- Who is in the Captains Chair driving that truck IS. The. Boss. I don't care which of you wears the pants at home in the marriage. The person driving that truck that moment is the Boss. If it is necessary for that Boss to ask YOU to do something, please do it quickly.

2- Domestic arguments are arrest able on sight by police driving by your cab. Police have actually pulled me and wife over once or twice when we were too busy having a loud armwaving argument at 70 mph. If there is a problem one of you needs to understand that sleeper is a house of peace. Close the curtains and STAY in there until the mind is correct again and there is actual PEACE. That is, with a little bit of love not the 30 below zero kind that can lead to wrecking out there.

You two are going to have a adventure I can promise you that. But the process of learning never stops. All I can tell you is good luck. You are both going to need it.

I'd jump on the Lily or Superior.
R&L Carriers would be even better; call and ask.

Nussbaum is similar to the firm for which I run. After years of tanker & flatbed. I’d look more closely. I admire my boss for his brains & character and he very much admires Nussbaum.

And, no, it’s NOT the money. It’s about the best company. The 10,000 Details of Trucking is a difficult textbook. The best help makes clear which part is yours and which part is theirs.

The money is about the same anywhere you go. In general. So it’s important to be happy. Which is difficult to explain to someone new.

I’m a believer in being trained to do the more difficult truck jobs. Haz Mat tanker is one of those. The risks are also real. Best to learn that together. You can rilly scare the you know what with those.

There is no perfect job. All trucking is difficult. The best advice is still (within the niche you work) to find the company that never advertises for help, and from which men retire. Or die. But never quit.

I once walked in as a Xmas temp driver. “The new guy” had been there fifteen years. More than thirty drivers. Huge metro area (no shortage of choice).

I’ve met some couples whom I greatly enjoyed. Five minutes or five hours of their company. They’re special.

    Good luck.
