I was wondering if anybody else here has panic attacks or anxiety? This is all new to me and I don't like it very much. Since I started getting panic attacks while driving I am not currently working. I was put on medicine for anxiety and am seeing limited results.
I'm not one to take medicine so my body is very sensative to medicine. I don't want to be seen as the crazy lady but would like feedback from anybody who wants to share about thier anxiety issues. How do you handle yours? Are you cured? Are you a former anxiety sufferer? Any information would be helpful.
Does anybody have anxiety/panic attacks?

Finally a topic on which I have practical knowledge.
My anxiety attacks didn't start until I was about 19. I didn't seek treatment until I was in my 30's.
Anxiety is usually situational so if you can determine what it is that triggers your anxiety attacks and avoid it thats the first step. I have taken Klonapin .25 mg and Buspar for anxiety sporadically over the last 9 years or so. The Klonapin for me works better and more quickly. None of that month wait around to kick in. If it's going to work it works within 45-90 minutes. It does not make me a zombie it just allows me to function normally. Judging by my Wii playing, it has not affected my reflexes either.
Buspar at 10 mg a day worked for about a year, then the doc upped it to 15 mg, then 15 mg twice a day, then 20 mg twice a day. At this point I said isn't there something else I can take? As the least little thing had me wanting to rip off someones head, and no, it wasn't PMS. That's when the doc switched me back to 5 mg of Klonapin. I remembered from before that was too much but they don't come smaller. I cut them in half with a pill cutter. I take half in the morning and half at bedtime I'm more energetic and productive. I have been on this dosage for 2 weeks now, but I noticed a difference immediately.
I also try to do yoga at least 3 times a week it's very relaxing. I bought my tapes off ebay but have seen them in the sale bins at Target for under $10.blessedwith3boys, Pixel, panhandlepat and 1 other person Thank this. -
I had them in my late twenties....
The docs put me on Xanex but unfortunately that's when companies started to drug test and I had to stay off the drugs or lose my job.
It is chemically and psychologically induced and you may or may not need professional counseling.
For me...I seriously thought I was having a heart attack each and every time and the emergency ward was my second home for a while when I had the attacks.
What worked for me was to just "make it" an hour at a time...if you have anxiety attacks, you know what I mean. I can remember driving down the freeway and "living" bridge to bridge in heavy traffic....it got that bad....
Believe me, with the support of your family and friends you'll get through it....
pm me if you have any more questions....blessedwith3boys and Pixel Thank this. -
I was given Lexapro and my body is very sensative so I couldn't just take the 10mg like the doctor prescribed because it made me feel like I was going to crawl out of my skin! It made me very restless and gave me other side effects too. Today is the first day I've taken a full 10mg and I've been on it slowly increasing my dose slowly. I had to go to the emergency room when my anxiety was so bad I could not sleep and was given Ativan 1mg. I brake those in half because I hate taking medicine and use those sparingly. I have read side effects of medicines and prefer to take as little as possible for as short a period of time as possible. I am not working right now and God bless my husband for being so supportive of me. One of my biggest fears is breaking down while driving and not being able to get help. I was currently working as a homemaker/companion where I'd have to drive elderly clients around but I have all this anxiety about breaking down. God forbid if I ever broke down with a client. I have a pre-paid cell phone but sometimes I can't get a signal. Oh well, before I write a book. Thankyou both for the support. It means a lot to me.
Cybergal Thanks this. -
Lexapro 10mg but I had to slowly work my way up to the 10mg. Today is the first day I can actually take the whole pill without too many side effects besides feeling restless. I also have some Ativan 1mg. I dont' want to use those as a crutch instead of trying to work my way through my attacks. I brake those in half when I really need them. I don't like to be on medicine at all. -
not sure about the ativan but the lexapro is one that builds up in your system and requires 1-4 weeks to begin working fully.make sure you tell your doc what works and does not work for you.communication is key.with your doctor and your support.

Not to be offensive, but is that a safe driving condition? Is someone prone to anxiety attacks actually able to make the split second decisions required to steer/brake/damage control a truck when people start piling up in front of your 80,000lb. 70mph dreadnought?
My wife had those in front of people (she's partly disabled/disfigured) and was virtually useless when they happened. I sort of hope you're not behind me when the fecal matter hits the ventilator. -
That is exactly why I'm not driving at this time.

Tip of the Hat, ma'am.
I do pray as well for your recovery. My wife found it all to be psychological and I'm glad she didn't go the drug route. Now if I could just get her to shut UP!!!
