Looks pretty thick. I used red A/F when it first came out. After Truck sat for 3 mo it turned to jello. Went back to yellow/ green Preston’s.Recently went back to red/ orange Final charge. as it’s supposed to be good. Must be a bad oil leak for a while maybe and it’s just clumping up.

With all due respect, 10 gallons of mud makes a lousy engine lubricant and you need to stop where ever your at and replace the oil and filter with the cheapest stuff you can find, consider that your "flush", and get to a "Home Base" where you can "RECOVER" from the "bad news" your most likely going to receive. It very well could be any one of the problems previously mentioned but the negligence of not keeping the oil changed (knowing there was a problem), (I've personally condemned several motors) that had damaged "chipped polished surfaces" (cam , valve train, crank) on every component I looked at, and those were just the ones I could see, no point going deeper and adding to the bill, just a boat weight. Don't get me wrong, you can have a liner leak, an oil cooler leak or any other oil mix type leak that doesn't affect the performance, and "run it till the cows come home", as long as you keep the oil changed FREQUENTLY. And changing any one of these components individually for some defect or another is not normal but done frequently enough and is not an engine killer by itself, but if this has been ongoing and not been managed properly, the "end" of most people's wallet is near (anything can be fixed, just takes money). Now a complete and thorough inspection should be done top and bottom (underhaul possibly), plus the repair (most likely oil cooler gasket as previously stated), and what little "mud" your seeing, is spread throughout that motor and needs to be "flushed" and cleaned by hand (oil pan, valve cover, ect.) again if necessary. Hope it's not to the "extreme" points I've experienced but the clock is ticking...tic-tok,... just my thoughts, thanks.

Had several oil cooler seals go bad, one just as bad as this one, the driver kept ignoring the sludge until the truck went in for a complete maintenance. It was in the shop for a week as they had to flush the engine out, oil return galleries were plugging up and the oil pan had a lot of sludge in it, I think they said it was almost twice as big as a softball. The radiator and heater core both had to be flushed out, which I ended up just having the radiator replaced. The mechanic said this was the worst they ever seen.

Thanks for your input guys. Yesterday was the first day I noticed lots sludge in surge tank and today I am getting it checked . I almost everyday check coolant. Not long ago my transmission cooler failed. So I flushed cooling system many times and kept an eye on coolant tank. I guess it’s not that bad yet because cooling system is sludgy, not the engine oil. If it’s oil cooler and oil pressure being more then coolant pressure lot of oil went in coolant and small amount of coolant in oil. I hope that’s the case anyways.

That oil cooler looks too complicated. No wonder they fail.

If it’s just the oil cooler engine should be fine. Not ideal but still has lubricantion.Lots of cascade dw soap or Ajax brand worked better for me cheaper too.flush oil too. Then watch for residual in both oil and a/f. I ran about 60 miles with a bad injector trying to get home with it. Didn’t realize it was dumping fuel. Shut down made it to T/S .Changed injector and oil. I had at least 10 gal of fuel in oil. On a million mile engine. Still going strong Over year later.

Talking about #16 and bolts #20. I would install the updated one piece oil filter bypass valve while you are there (#14, #22)

Pitted liners from cavitation. If it’s the oil cooler. The oil would be so thick in ur reservoir you could stand a spoon up in it. Sorry.
