Quick wheel seal question...

Just found my left steer leaking!! Got skf Classic from dealer per vin # at last minute. Realized it’s not the seal I wanted. Too late they’re closed. Going to do the oiled up mudflap trick I guess.must have been stemco guardian hp I used last time. Get 1 in the morning.Luckily it was barely low on oil.

 

Looks like a well used wear ring installation tool in the picture, the blue can with a handle. A little sealer on the spindle before the wear ring is fine. A little sealer in the hub bore or seal OD, fine. I do mean just a skim. Sealant between the seal lip and wear ring should not be done.

 

I would never let someone cut the spindle off and weld a new one on even if he called himself a doctor. It will not be true straight when done. Replace the whole axle and be done with it. It cost a little more in the beginning but will save you money in tires in the end.

 

I thank Axle Doctor is a franchise. While I thought the same thing I have seen several owner operators choose to do this. They hired and had it done on drive axles. We just put it back together. The work looked very good and I did not see a tire wear problem.
The only one I have had done was on an older single axle low boy with the axle welded in the I beam frame. It was bought at auction and found a spindle gobbed up by the previous owner. That worked out most excellent. Cannot comment on tire wear as these will be replaced for dry rot before wear.
Not selling anything here that is just my experience. They can answer their own alignment questions if they wish.
