(NOTE: i did not want to infringe or hijack the other ups parcel/feeder thread(s), so i started this one)
A little background/introduction:
A new thing is going on at freight, where IF either there is no work/slow work at freight or if you wish to work weekends, you can go over to small pack IF there is a need at small pack (and seeing how it's now the busy season at small pack, then yes, there will be a great need for a while). So, i went over to see how it's like. Plus i need more $$$ for reasons i don't want to get into right now.
1) In my opinion, the fact that i and most of you DO NOT work for ups parcel / a.k.a small pack etc. is a cause for CELEBRATION!
a) ups parcel / small pack has a knack for making something interesting, boring.
Soon after i clocked in, i'm looking at the clock wishing that it would all be over.
Despite all the F'd up things you might have heard about freight, at least the job is still FUN and exciting to a certain extent. It doesn't feel like a grind at least.
b) Everything at small pack seems so detached; The people in one department don't know---or care about anyone in other departments. Here you feel like your just a cog in the wheel, so to speak. At least at freight everyone pretty much knows each other----even at big terminals. There's more of a togetherness at freight.
The atmosphere at Freight vs. parcel is TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
2) Here are things ups parcel is good at:
a) ##### ing up a customer's order.
b) Making stuff that is normally interesting, boring.
i think one of the main problems is ups parcel has forgotten they are in the PACKAGE DELIVERY business. Instead, the emphasis is on numbers. They should get back to delivering packages and customer service as their main focus and then numbers and everything else second.
Companies like Southwest Airlines do not have above mentioned problems. BECAUSE they realize customer service IS the #1 priority.
3) Don't get me wrong. i'm not saying you should automatically and definitely not work for ups parcel:
If you don't mind:
a) being bored out of your skull.
b) realizing you are just a cog in the giant machine. No-one cares about you and no-one looks at you as anything more than just a cog in the giant machine.
c) feeling like a robot for the entire time you are on duty.
d) loosing your identity, living in a very bland sandy/brown world (the walls of the service centers/hubs or whatever the F they call them are sandy/brown)
e) And if you are anal retentive as F.
Then ups parcel may be for you. i mean the feeder drivers do get paid pretty good.
This is shocking to me, but i would rather do food service than work at parcel.
This is a cause for celebration! (a ups small pack thread)

f) If you are former military, then you might fit in better at parcel because you've gone thru the whole blandness, everyone needs to be the same, everything needs to be uniform thing. And you can handle it.

I do not mind working at UPS.
A. It's no more or less boring than any other trucking job I've had. This is job #6. All have been...trucking. Lots of books on tape and podcasts to keep my brain working.
B. I've been a cog in a lot of machines. I show up, I do the thing, I go home. Easy enough.
C. Again, it's trucking. Do the things, go home and count your money.
D. I look great in brown. I'm an autumn! I even match the building, to boot. How cool is that?
E. Now this one you got me on. I'm anal retentive af. But I do that to protect my life and license, and the lives of other people on the road. So I don't say that with any shame.
F. I am not former military, but even when I worked at ABF, I had a "uniform" of sorts: a t-shirt with a work shirt over it, and cargo pants for holding my pocket stuff and tools. I don't need a "the ##### fell off" Harley shirt at work, nor do I need a ZZ Top beard. I'm there to work. I like the demarcation, as it keeps my brain on work things.
To each their own, though.Banker, Sirscrapntruckalot, De Trucker and 5 others Thank this. -

I worked there last week and didn't mind it at all. Completely different from freight but not necessarily in a bad way. All the management I dealt with were nothing but respectful to us freight guys.

Pshhh. I did a road test for feeder back in September. The manager that did my road test was a pompous a-hole that looked down on freight guys. Hence why I called the parcel guys the girly men lol. Needless to say, I still passed the test to 'ups standards' and was offered the job, but didnt feel like working one week at a 2pm start, and the next at an 11pm start (which I found out after doing the road test and all). Not to mention that if you are on the seniority list, a small pack guy can jump over to feeder and have his seniority follow him which can bump you down on the list. Yeah, no thanks on that. Dont care if you are paying me 40 bucks an hour. It aint worth it to be a zombie working for big brown that just looks at their drivers as a number.
