is that what it's come to?

called about a job today. asked about weekly mileage. was told 2000 a week. now, I've been around the block a time or two, so I already KNOW this is stretching it a bit at this time of the year, with a job being home every weekend, and especially as fudged up as the economy is right now.

so, the starting pay is $0.34 per mile to start and $0.35 per mile after 6 months, which is their TOP pay. so if you do the math, this is $680 a week IF you run 2000 miles. so if you figure 14 hour days, at 5 days (which is pretty unrealistic as you would most likely leave on sunday and not get home until friday) you come up with 70 hours. if you figure everything over 40 at time and a half, you would come up with 85 hours - 40 + (30 X1.5)

so, $680/ 85 hours = $8.00. and you think some people are kidding when they say they might as well shovel french fries at that rate. and keep in mind, some trucking schools want you to plop down $3,000-10,000 to get a job making $8.00/hour????? and this is NOT a company that accepts students, in case you're thinking about telling me that you have to "pay your dues" and move on to a better company. some of the "bottom feeders" are paying well south of 30 cents per mile.

    seriously???

I don't follow your math. Where did the 85 hours come from? Also, if you're only running 2000 miles a week, you almost certainly won't be working 70 hours, more like 45, and that's including your pre-trips, post-trips and fueling.

    So if you figure gross $680 # 45 hours it comes out to more like $14.30/hr. (40 x $14.30 = $572) (5 x 21.45 = $107.25) (total $679.25). Still not excellent money, but much better than $8/hr.

I'd rather drive and get the &*^$# out of the cities...I have a job with a view.
I agree, you can't count all of those hours...as an O/O....if I could charge for all the extra hours I spend on paperwork, phone calls, turning a wrench...well you know...there's a name for that...it's called "Donation Time".
