I don't cut grass at all; my home in Nevada and my home in China, the HOA does all that. They cut the grass, trim the bushes, plant the flowers, and a automatic sprinkler does the watering. The HOA even sets the timers on the sprinkler system. They even take care of the outside of the house' painting, etc.VIDEODROME and Rideandrepair Thank this.

. I retired at age sixty-six from a company I'd been with for over twenty years, fifteen driving and five in the office. After a year I was bored so when they offered me some part time work in the office I took it.
Part time turned into full time. Didn't take long for it to happen either.
Then, to compound all my other lapses in judgement, one of the owners died and I bought out his share of the business.
I spend most of my time in the office or in a pickup but I still get out and drive occasionally.
The upside is that we have a good bunch of people running the day to day stuff and I can sneak off to go fishing or spend time with the family just about whenever I want.

They have HOAs in China?Rideandrepair and stillwurkin Thank this.

Yes, they do. They're changing the laws on HOA's over there because some people refuse to pay the fees and there's no laws to enforce it. I always pay mine, on all 3 condos because, to me, it's the right thing to do. I appreciate how hard the maintenance people work to keep the places nice and something to be proud of for the owners. Same here in Nevada. Sometimes in China the wife and I will take some hot meals to the office people and some of the maintenance workers and let them know we appreciate their work.Rideandrepair, VIDEODROME, SidewaysBentHalo and 3 others Thank this.

I wouldn't mind the HOA if I didn't have the hobbies I have, radio is one big one. I moved here because I have people who don't give a crap what I or others do to their property, it isn't about property values. BUT we stick together.
I wondered about China's private property laws, is it like Mexico's?Rideandrepair and Chinatown Thank this. -
I don't know how Mexico rules are. In China, you own the home, but the government owns the land. You lease the land for 75 years, but there's no cost. You can pass the lease on when you die or if you sell the home, the new owner gets the land lease.
If the government needs the land for something, such as a road, they have to pay fair market value to the homeowner.
My wife's cousin and his family were living with his mother in the house they owned since before WWII. I've been to the home and it's a plain concrete house. The government needed the land to build condos and they offered cash or two of the new condos plus a spot in the parking garage. He took up the offer of two new condos and the parking spot. He was allowed to look over the plans for the new condo'\s and of course picked two of the nicest ones.
My wife's sister and her husband were renting some land for a crab farm. The government needed the land for right-of-way for a new high speed train rail. The government gave them $100,000.00 USD to move, even though they were just renting the land. The money was compensation for losing the crab business. They used the money to start a new one a few miles away, plus had a lot left over for a down payment on a fancy condo; 4 bedroom/2 bath.
China isn't like many people think.
The reason the government builds condo complexes is for displaced families. The slang term for the condos is "farmer houses." The government encourages people to move from rural areas to the cities and depending on what the property is worth, will either give the family a free condo or sell it at a huge discount, well below what the condo is actually worth.
There was one family that received 6 new condos, so the live in one and rent the other 5.Last edited: Dec 3, 2018

I’ll be trucking until I can’t anymore, God willing. That image of the “American dream” someone mentioned sounds not even remotely appealing.
