The pay variance you are exp., welcome to container hauling. I know O/O's in my area that can go for months on end making $4,000/wk to the truck, then suddenly the bottom will fall out and they'll be lucky to do $1,500/wk. It also depends on how the company you are leased to pays, and what the rates are. In area, most O/O's are actually lease operators, most getting 72% ot 78% to the truck, the company I work for (I'm a company driver) we require our O/O's to be independents, own insurance, authority, etc., they rely on us for SCAC codes for access to the ramps and depots. I don't recall if it's 90% or 95% to the truck. Until this past August, our 3 O/O's were working the same hours as us company drivers, 5 or 6 days a week, 10 to 12 hrs every day. In late August it started to get slow, so for the last month and half, it's been variable, some weeks they might work 3 days, some weeks they might work 5 days, and it might be 5 hrs a day or it might be 8 hrs a day, it can vary that much.

i feel like theres no way out except containers in chicago area. feel trapped

Taint so. Chicago is everything to the United States. You should still have steel to the east and south, food via the markets there, all sorts of freight west and north and so on. Wisconsin is a Stronghold for Military through cheese etc.
As much as I don't do Chicago, I find your statement amazing. There you are in one of the greatest trade routes from the time of our Pioneers and Beef unable to get anything other than Container? Hmm. -
lol. i mean theres work.but i mean $$. containers u make $$ and home. if i can get dry van same ill go.
