I was advised by a mechanic to replace the 3.21 rear end on my bus with a 2.64 because I have a direct drive, but I don't know where to get it done. Do any of you know a shop in Nevada or Arizona where I can do it?
Where to replace rear end ratio?

If they do drive lines should be just a diff swap out, about 4 hours labour . I recommend Weller remains.

That big of a jump will drop you 330 ish rpm per gear. Do not know what that bus has in it for a motor, what size tires it has, what transmission. But ... Its going to be a fair bit slower on acceleration and probably a dog in the hills. Unless you are running crazy RPM at speed, I would leave it be.
As stated any place can do it. Do you have a single drive axle? A single 3rd member swap for a re manufactured unit with a warranty will be 1800 ish dollars plus labor and fluid. A bit cheaper if your unit is removed, taken to a gear place and rebuilt.Swadian Thanks this. -
Anyone have BSFC chart for the Series 60 11.L? The engine 6067WK28. Cruising at 70 mph with 315/80R22.5 and direct drive transmission. Currently 1800 RPM at 70 mph on the flat; the change should make it 1500 RPM.
Last time I went to WW Williams I was under impression they couldn't do it. How much would it cost? -
OK, WW Williams can do it, but won't give me a quote until we drive it there. How much does it usually cost per axle? Would like to know a ballpark in case they try to overcharge.
-
I would imagine it cost 2500 to 3500. I blew a rear end in PA and it set me back 3k
Swadian Thanks this. -
Sounds good. I heard people quoting me $5000-8000 and I knew that was too high.
How much fuel can one expect to save by going to higher rear end and dropping RPM by 300? BSFC shows optimal RPM for 6067WK28 at 1500; currently it would be 1800 at our cruising speeds. -
max 5 hours of labor each 3rd member for removal and replacement. Max 2100 for 3rd member with interaxle, 1800 for rear.
I just had both replaced in a semi truck DS404's which are on the higher end of price. Front one grenaded so had to have the hubs removed. Paid for new yokes, and reman thru shaft. 6300 in portland with 110hr labor rate
Does your bus have two live drive axles? usually there is only one drive and a dead axle for weight capacity.Socal Xpress Thanks this.
