If you was west of the Mississippi I'd say just drive it... But east of the Mississippi is a whole other ball of wax. Here in Idaho you see heavy duty pickup trucks with triple axle trailers in the high school student parking lots.

I don't mind saying that crap confuses me. I think as long as the total vehicle weight is under 26,001 and the power vehicle rated weight's under 26,001 your OK.
Edited to add that based on what the FMCSA considers a commercial vehicle in 383.5 all of this might not matter. I have had this commercial vehicle thing to bite me more then once. The truck is not being used in commerce. It is just a work truck. Now before somebody falls all over themselves here go back and read my first sentence!Last edited: Dec 11, 2018
Bean Jr., Dan.S and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
So, @Moose1958 I suppose the moral of this story is that Internet forums probably aren’t the best place to get advice, and even those that TRY to educate themselves on various matters of legal technicalities can be wrong (me) or confused (you) at times.
Farmerbob1, Bean Jr., REO6205 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Wouldn’t the Op need a Chauffeurs License even if under 26k? if being compensated for his work? I know it’s his Uncle and this is a favor. Hope the DOT believes that and doesn’t ticket him for not having one.

On this forum and the others I contribute to a subject will get 3 responses from me. I will answer from a position of I know what I am talking about and post links, or I will say I believe something to be right and if possible post a link if I can find one. Then I will do as above. Sometime I just stay out of it. I'm not scared to admit when I am wrong. I have did so several times over the past several years right here in TTR. My biggest problem is it has been 6 years since I operated a truck. Today i would only be guessing about roads. I got into trouble with this road subject a while back on US 59 in Texas.Dan.S Thanks this.

To the best of my understanding no. All you need to operate a CMV under 26,001 is a regular license and a medical card.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

In my state any Delivery job even auto parts in a Van a Chauffeurs is needed.
-
My info is dated it may have changed. The State is Michigan. They recently reminded needing a USDOT # on Vehicles under 26 k I believe. A few yrs ago they went nuts requiring them on everything. I Don’t get how a Federal USDOT# On vehicle requirement rule can be decided by a State either. I best keep Driving Lol.
