Depends on what's important to you. Personally I think any OTR job is a slow road to death. On the other hand lots of people look at what I do and say it's not for them.
A secure retirement is up to you. I know people in their prime earning years that have more credit card debt than retirement savings.
Public sector jobs usually have a better retirement plans. In NV people working under the old PERS plan are doing very well. New people are doing less well.
Look at pro athletes, should be set for life, many are not.
"retirement" companies that offer the best in return?

I feel like we have derailed. I had a poor choice of words when I said retirement.
What are the good names in trucking. The places that are hard to get into. The career goal type companies. And what is reasonable to expect as an experienced driversnowlauncher and Nothereoften Thank this. -
Estes Express
R&L Carriers
Old Dominion Freight Lines
Southeastern Freight Lines
With those listed above; the premium driving job is line haul. They all have decent benefits, great hometime for those interested in that. Those are companies drivers stay and retire from.snowlauncher and Dan.S Thank this. -
Many hazmat/tanker companies are good and usually very choosy as to the drivers they hire. Most have good benefits and drivers that have been there for years.
This is one in Bangor: Dysarts . There's several in Maine to choose from.

I think in todays day and age the single job for a career is over. Them jobs are so few and far any more. Sure you may land a great gig, but how long will it last? Landstar took a hit, not so great any more. Walmart took it hard in the last couple years. Seems like you find a good family run gig & what’s running it is the last generation that cares about the business. With no one in the wings to take over, that dream job has a imminent experation date. Be it 5-10-15yrs out.
To anybody who finds that job, God bless you & i’m jealous!rabbiporkchop, x1Heavy, Samarquis and 1 other person Thank this. -
Halliburton is hiring.
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
There is no such thing. It was long ago back in those days when you piddle about with a 40 mile haul and money really means nothing. Just the story telling, meal times and scaring the newbies. You were invited to come into a 18 wheeler to clean up someone's messie. Or to go recover that truck. (I recovered quite a few, and without fail they always hae about 8 or so free form macro pages of ranting against dispatcher. making a mockery of my long posts)
Keep driving. When you retire you are going to be sorry you did in a way. Retired people do not do well over a period of time. They pass on early when they find that they make a mistake retiring like that.Samarquis Thanks this. -
If you were to measure the rusting and completely shut factory, shipping and assembly putting a few hundred people out of work? Sure. All gone, Closed. Bye bye. So solly. No work. And certainly no home for that wonderful daycab and 25 trailers I shuffled with it. I could do that all my life (Almost did...) even if I had hired on, the company itself was probably already dead man walking with that particular facility being shut down in a few years hence with razor wire installed.
I don't mind day cab too much, however Port East taught me that if you are going to do this, you must fill in the time, laying around in Norfolk on your ### in a container yard from 8 Am to 6Pm waiting for a box back to Baltimore when there are oceans full of ships with boxes going to Baltimore. It's silly. If Port East had a small sleeper in that daycab then it would have been perfect. I would have still be running for them today.
Hahn had a daycab for me too. But a bulk tanker made sure that I ran from 2 am until around 6 PM every day with 5 or 6 loads delivered for 300-450 daily. Containers need only a few minutes to go thump onto a chassis. Therefore the level of waiting all day by several hundred truckers is beyond efficient. It's in the land of ########.
There will always be a need for daycabs, however when day cab companies learn to spend 4000 dollars and put on a sleeper big enough to rest a human then they will learn that they have a rested and happy workforce able to withstand the crazy hours of waiting.Last edited: Dec 13, 2018

I think I better understand what you want. Sorry, I am going to have to disappoint you. By your post, I am assuming you are asking about none megas and you are wanting actual names of a company. Get ready for this thread to go to a thousand or more replies.
I'm going to give you the best advice I have. Get your foot into the door. Find a job if you have to hauling rubberized dog manure out of Omaha. Keep your eyes open for an opportunity. Example? I was speaking to someone about 6 or 7 months ago. They were sitting inside (if I understood him correctly) the El Paso Petro. Happened to overhear a guy speaking to another driver about a small specialty carrier up in Colorado begging for drivers. Got on the internet found them and made a call. Happy as a clam today. -
401 K's and ROTH accounts are great
The only advice i would give is stay far away from any company that doesn't offer
some kind of basic retirement savings system for their drivers
They should also be willing to add 4 to 6% on on top of what you contribute
They should also offer Medical and Dental for their driversBigDog Trucker and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
