Why would you ask 35k? After purchasing a truck with cash and financing a trailer and having 6 months of bill money saved. Do you think I still will need 35k set aside?

Wanna know why you see 1 hotshot set up for every 100 flatbed trucks? Because its not a real money maker. Sure when the market is up, especially oilfield, there's work. But let market drop then what are you gonna haul?
With a tandem semi, you can run multiple trailers and be more diverse.
You know what I'd try to do? Find a lawyer and see about getting that DUI removed from your record or atleast reduced to something else if possible (just takes some $).
Then talk to your buddy and see about running a truck for him. Get your feet wet and learn the industry.CrappieJunkie and Yelsew Thank this. -
To get your CDL is gonna be around $3500-$4000 depending on which school you choose...
So that right there is what $23,000 in and then don't forget all the other documents you need
IFTA, Authority, Plates, Trailer, Maintenance account... so yea $35,000 is a good number to be at...
Do your research man there is more to it than going out and buying a truck/trailer and slapping a name on it... What about relationships with customers/brokers...
What about all the documents and filings you have to do each year... Audits, etc...
I swear you kids don't have a fricken clue what it takes to run a business...Yelsew Thanks this. -

Just my two cents. I would get the cdl- pay for it yourself. Then get in touch with your friend or another company and go to work as a mechanic. Make sure you work at a place with someone who will teach you. You will learn about fixing the truck and trailer when it breaks. While you’re doing that- get with a lawyer and get rid of that DUI if you can. If you don’t hate trucks by then- be a company driver for at least a year. If you don’t hate trucks by then- buy one and go for it! Also, while you’re doing this keep saving money towards it. Do it! Our industry needs motivated people who came up through the shop!

How old are you?
What's wrong with current job? Seems you make enough to save some.
If you hate your job I can understand, but if you can live with it then I would rethink this.
You have a long row to hoe till DUI is 10 years old.
Do not quit current job till you have absolutely EVERYTHING in place and tripled checked.
Hope you the best.Yelsew Thanks this. -
