In all fairness when I worked for companies that had speed limited trucks I would stick to the middle lane on 3 lane sections inside cities for several reasons.
1. Since our government in 2 of our provinces limits our speeds to no more than 65mph it puts us in a bad spot. Even worse most companies govern at 62. Your average speed limit is 68-70 in the US. So already we are at a loss. This is why I stay in the middle lane. Cars, and even trucks merging on or off a highway have tried to rush me, or cut me off because I'm just 'stuck' in their path. I've have to slam the brakes on more than 4 dozen times to avoid crushing a car. So moving from the right lane to the left alleviates this problem by moving me out of the merge 'collection'
2. Most of the time the right lane gets backed up. For either exits or just stupidity on the shoulder in major cities forcing things to slow down. Being governed I would never be able to get back up to speed as fast if I got stuck in the lane and tried to swing out. So I would either have to wait or, cut someone off. Again middle lane fixes this issue.
3. For whatever reason road designers like the F*** with the right lane and make it do weird things, and can never seem to place the signs right. So I know if I'm driving straight through a place the middle lane is a safe bet to not get stuck on a must exit lane, or get stuck on an ending lane while another lane is added to the left. Cause #### the right lane right?!
Once the urban area passes it's a safe bet to move over again and have your travel speed unaffected. Anyone who drives Chicago, Twin cities, NY, NJ, is gonna understand both point regardless if you like them or not. It's also a practice we learn in Canada as our drivers at times can be worse than Americans with merging, and exiting. So through painful experience we learn to just remove ourselves from the problem, but with nearly 300% more population than us your issue with merging is more apparent.
Now I work with a company and drive an ungoverned truck so being in the middle lane is less of an issue to some of you guys, who aren't stuck doing 65 in a 68 or 65 in a 70.
Driving practices of Canadian drivers while Driving in the US?

Our speed limiters are a major pain. Just this week i was passing a guy in the left going uphill in MA, soon as the road levels off he goes right past not 3 miles down the road at probably 75mph....F*** me i was mad lol...naturally i caught him again 2 more times as i was empty going up the hills there.
The REAL problem is the god ###### cars. First of all, why are you riding right behind me where i cant see you in the mirror for miles even when im under the speed limit? Secondly, why do you pull up beside my truck and just sit there when theres NOTHING in front of you? 3rd, TURN YOUR ####### HIGH BEAMS DOWN!!!!Canadianhauler21, joey8686 and uncleal13 Thank this. -
ok. fair enough, I drive linehaul. So every reason listed ,while reasonable doesnt apply at night.
So is it habit for the reasons listed above?
And thank you for taking the time to answer what I asked. Much appreciated.
Safe and Happy Holidays to you and yours.Canadianhauler21 and HighwaySuperTramp Thank this. -
I was almost involved in a bad wreck a few years ago. I had explosive mix hazmat on and I was on the far outside lane. Car cut me off then came to a stop trying to turn. I can't shake the backs of his kids heads out of my memory. I woulda killed them, I still don't know how I didnt. But he managed to get away and my entire load from front to back fell foreward I braked that hard. (It was all caged so nothing had came of that)
So yeah it became a habit real quick to stay out of those lanes.. lol I still have nightmares over it. I would have leveled that entire city block or more if that load went off.. -

Don't matter what flag you're flyin', there's dickheads on both sides of the line.

I'm Canadian driver and I also have noticed that there is annoying issue with Canadian drivers not keeping right line except to pass.4 whellers using mostly left lane and police tolerate this
There is another very important subject the trucks equipped with'' On guard system"as my. To pass another vehicle I have to change the line 340 feet before it . My truck will slow down itself to match the speed of the vehicle in front of me. In this moment I'm blocking center or left line for long time. ON Guard also read the elevation level and slow down on the top on the hill dramatically to begin to coast to save fuel -
The biggest issue with Canadian drivers. The #### cars!
I drive on both sides of the border as well. Car only in Canada.
My god what a bunch of ###### idiots!!
I don’t see how these people survive the ride to work each day. Wide open in the city, wide open on the 1. Wide open pulling out of their driveways.
It takes a special breed of driver to put up with that all day. And not just run over them.BigHossVolvo and magoo68 Thank this. -
I don't have ON Guard but mine will do that. It's the adaptive cc. You can override it with the pedal though. At least I can. I wouldn't be surprised if it can be programmed to take that option away from you.
Maybe it's just me but if it's that difficult to pass someone in a timely manner I'll just stay behind them. Drop 1 or 2 mph and problem solved.
