I see no mention of Williamette from these drivers waiting it out. Maybe they ran out of fuel, and can’t charge their phones/tablets because all the batteries have been drained too.
I’ve chained even when there is no chain law in force. I drive my truck. Not some idiot sitting at a desk 200 miles away.
I’ve also gotten tickets for not running chains lol That guy sitting at that desk, had a buddy waiting at the top
snowlauncher and Oxbow Thank this. -
When running LTL linehaul over mountain passes in the Rockies, you will chain up guaranteed! There is no other option, unless the road is closed entirely, then you may sit or layover. That's one big difference between being OTR vs. LTL...

Same with local and regional. Chain up and make it home for the night. Sure beats sitting in a day cab in a snowbank.Oxbow, snowlauncher and Radman Thank this.

Im honestly a better driver now in the snow cause of this. Been driving through the mountain passes of I-70 or Wyoming I80 for the pass 7 years and I feel I’m way more comfortable driving in snow then 7 years ago.snowlauncher Thanks this.

Glad to see the last few comments were related to a question I was going to ask. I’m a local driver in the PNW but I’m not in any enforced chain mountain passes. But, I don’t like to slide around. Was wondering who else puts them on just for that extra traction when it starts laying down pretty good. I guess it helps when your paid by the hour. No boss can (or should) question the extra time it takes to chain up to be safe.

I drive form ID to MT 5 nights a week. It can get pretty hairy, especially on the hills. My boss would never question a delay due to chaining or slowing down due to poor road conditions... At my company anytime you do or don't do something based on reasonable safety precautions, you will not be questioned further or pressured.Accidental Trucker, Air Cooled and Oxbow Thank this.

Your boss is a smart man. One thing a good boss realizes is that piling unnecessary pressure on a driver is counter productive.snowlauncher, Long FLD and Oxbow Thank this.

I've chained more times when it wasn't required than I have when it was.
Oxbow and snowlauncher Thank this. -
The run that I make doesn't really have any chain advisories, but that doesn't mean you won't have to chain up in the deep stuff. If you spin out on a steep grade and end up blocking the traffic lane you better be quick to get that iron on... Not only is it dangerous, but if a bear rolls up you will also get a fine for obstructing a travel lane. Not worth the risk IMO so I try to play it safe and chain up when in doubt.
