What does everyone think on this subject? I currently have a nice 1996 w900L loaded, n14 Cummins, put a bunch of money into her, have a good company I’m on with that doesn’t care about year mileage etc, basically just needs paint maybe in the spring and would be my perfect truck. But still I’m torn between keeping it or getting something newer(mostly because when I tell people the year they get kinda snarky) Am I just prolonging the inevitable and getting outdated/obsolete by keepin her or is it still cool to run older trucks?.......

    Let the debate begin..............

Personally, any strong running pre-emissions truck out there gets my vote every time, and a the N14 is generally a solid runner. If you're itching to change, though, you could upgrade by 10 years and still have a pre-emissions truck.

If the load pay $3.00 per mile in old truck it will still pay $3.00 in a new truck. My 4 cents

Keep the old girl.I run a 02 pre-emission 379 that is approaching 3 million kms and would much rather put money into it than get something newer. If you take good care of the truck it will take good care of you.

It all depends on the freight you haul really. A big-hood, old school big-block will pull a deck just as well as a slope with a DPF. But if you are pulling a box, you will be at a stark disadvantage.

Also, the old hood is more strongly made and can handle off-road travel much more effectively, so you can think about it that way as well.

If you are getting good fuel economy and aren't pouring money into it, then there is no reason to get rid of it.

As long as it's not in the shop every other day than keep her on the road and put more money into your pocket

I ended up buying a new Pete in Calgary, drove it to California and my EGR went. The Pete dealer in LA and Fontana both told me that it would be a week before they could get me into a shop.

I called the Paccar rep in Western Canada and got in the same day, if it wasn't for that my brand new 5000km truck would have cost me a week downtime in one of the most expensive places on the west coast.

    Food for thought.

I'll die with older iron any time. You can keep the newest retail crap offered after say 2005 due to emissions etc.

There is a reason us old truckers stay around, have a chance at that old iron one more time. Im surprised you are conflicted. You already stated fuel mileage is of no concern. If that beast is hauling strong and not falling down on your shifts or jake, run the hell out of it. Stack your money. And do enjoy your time with it along the way.
