Most of the things you hear on the cb or in the truck stops about Swift, have been said about Roadway, Yellow, Preston, ETWNC or Hennis (lot of folks won't have any idea who those 2 were). Company I used to work for before they closed their doors even had the same comments made about them. That company would not hire drivers with less than 10 years clean OTR experience, and then you started out working the "extra" board.
My advice to you though: Regardless of what dispatch says, you are the driver. If they send you a load plan and after looking at it, you realise you can't legally/safely make the pick up and/or delivery time, tell them. Anything happens if you do it illegally, the monkey's on your back, not theirs. -
Hey JNB, you got by Prime? Nice, so did I, but they said that I had to have at least 4 months of over the road experience, which I don't. They were one of the companies that I wanted to go to, they have tanker, van, flatbed divisions. I think they're headquarters in is the midwest or something like that. They used to hire right out of trucking school, but with the economy is right now, you have to have at least 4 months experience. This is what the recruiter told me when he called me. If you have the 4 months experience, you can go with them, but thats up 2 you. I haven't heard bad things about them. They have a thread on the forum. Check it out if you like. But if you already got the go ahead from Swift and your just waiting for orientation, then what do you have to lose with Swift. I got a call from Conway last week, they are hiring new students from my area. But the pay is lower than swift and its the same thing, (OTR). I'll tell you what though, the only company that I would give up Swift for right now, is Schneider, for their tanker division. But, obviously they aren't hiring newbies anymore. So, again its up to you.

I got a question. Since I'm waiting for Swift to call me at the end of the month to give me my orientation date for April, I've haven't been in behind the wheel of a 10 speed since late January. When I go to Swift, I'm going to have to remember what I know. CR England has a refresher course, I guess for those that haven't been behind the wheel for awhile. What I'm asking is, is by the time I go to Swift (April) and the last time I drove a 10 speed (Jan 20), do I have to take a refresher or am I still ok?

You should be fine. Part of your orientation will be a driving test, and the guy that gives it is a cool cat. Just let him know it's been a couple of months and he may give you a little bit of time to get familiar with the controls beforehand.
On the driving test, it's pretty simple. You make 4 right turns and then drive around the yard and back the truck in. Pretty simple. -
Prime doesn't even want me to get my permit before I go but I'm going to anyway--Just in case something happens to change things--I've got 2 lined-up now. Prime and Swift-I have to make a choice this Weekend after I talk it over with my wife. The other choice is to go to school right in town and find a job after. I'm leaning to Prime because if I should not pass the test they won't charge me anything. I don't think they take it out of your pay either. I don't know who you talked to but that's not how I understand they work. The other thing is there are far more complaints about Swift than Prime. How much experioence do you have? There are some companies that will go for as little as 3 months. Good luck with whatever you choose. -
Supatruka,
Do you want my recruiters name and number?
JNB -
JNB,
I have no over the road experience. I only have my 300 plus hours of training. When the recruiter from Prime called me, he went over my application, everything was fine, however, I needed minimum 4 months experience OTR. I wanted on with them because of their tanker division. He told me that if I would have done this last year ('08), they would have taken me right out of school. But, obviously now is a different story. If you think it would help, then give me his name and number. But, then again, your from Oregon, I'm from New York. I don't think that has anything to do with it, but I would ask the recruiter you give me that question. If that doesn't work out, then Swift is it. I'm already set to relocate tomorrow to Rhode Island since that's where Swift is going to hire me from, 3 days orientation at the Syracuse terminal, then out 6 weeks with my trainer/mentor, then I get my own truck..................Hey DarkScneidr, thanks for helping me keep my hopes up for Swift. -
Her name is Tammy Silk: 866-290-1568 ex664
Good Luck -
im going to call, but if she says who referred me, I should tell her your name. Can you tell me your name? If you don't mind me asking. You might get a referral bonus if it works out, lol.
