Overhanging load between truck and trailer, is it legal?

I think its mostly out of date by now probably..i made it awhile back when i hauled alot of rebar, not so much anymore...ur better off finding one online thats more accurate.. Im sure u could find something.. Or u could go state by state and make ur own, can find all the regs online pretty easily

 

Don’t listen to this unless you want a ticket, I can think of 3 states that are 53’ only or you need permit, I’m sure there’s more.

 

Sure there is..... idk what states OP is specifically needing but I can tell you the legality concerning the south and a lot of the east just from running various permitted loads on a 53 flatbed I have....

 

You use to be able to get an oversized guide book at certain truck stops, was about 20$ 10 years ago not sure now

 

Keep in mind, in many states these overhang rules are for non-divisible loads. Loads such as cars and multiple pieces of machinery may not be permitted any overhang on 53' trailers. I dealt with this daily running high-mount (conventional 5th wheel) auto transport trailers.

 

Yep. I-10 in Florida will give you a $1,000 ticket that has to be paid before you leave the scale for being over length with a car bumper hanging off the rear...

 

Isnt Ooida trying to get the wording of that rule changed to allow high-mount auto transporters the ability to over hang the front the same as traditional auto transporters are allowed? I think I remember hearing something about this and how it affects auto transporters pulling high-mounts recently.

 

They submitted a request for FHWA to reconsider their interpretation of the regulations. That's the kicker, overhang on a high-mount auto transporter hasn't always been prohibited. The FHWA issued guidance that is based solely on an accompanying image that shows a head rack carrying a car, the regs say "may" not "must" or "shall".

Typical of regulations. What started as a gift to car haulers back when trucks were much shorter has become a burden since they can't keep up with the longer vehicles we have today.
