Can anyone give an example of state regs that prohibit overhang from the front of the trailer? The closest I've found is an asterisked note in Florida's code about a trailer being up to 53' total length including overhang.

I have a 45' refer but I see that there are plenty of 53' refers out there. Do they have to be permitted some places due to the overhang?

Idaho will want you to have flags and lights on the front corners when you get above 4ft front overhang. WA you will need a permit to overhang on either end of a 53 with a divisible load.

Call Washington and ask. In order to go 60ft with a divisible load you need at least one 60ft piece. So with LVL beams as long as you had one 60 then you can load 40/20 or 3 20’s or whatever. If you don’t have a 60 then you can buy a 56ft permit. We used to have to buy those for hauling cardboard bales. Other than that no overhang on a 53 in WA.

I was always 4ft or less in ID so never had any problems, only ever heard of the guys loading 60’s on 48ft trailers getting in trouble for too much front overhang without lights.

Ohio you can’t have any overhang at all front or rear on 53ft.

The reason 53' refers do not get ticketed is that the refrigerator unit is exempt because it is not a "cargo carrying extention". As a car hauler that gets ticketed for overhang I say B.S., without that refrigeration unit the trailer would be useless.

Federal Highway Administration has all sorts of little quirks in their regulations that guide how and what states can do. Finding clear black and white regulations in eachbstate is tricky, often they are in odd parts of the code or laws possibly even in sections not directly related to transportation.
