Hi everyone. I'm looking into buying new Freightliner Cascadia and they offer Cascadia with detroit powertrain. From the engine all the way to the end made by Detroit. It sounds good because for once you don't have need to worry who made what in a truck and everything made and tested in one place, utilizing everything possible into one piece. But Detroit Powertrain has only few specs. DD15 engine will have only 400 horses and differential ratios is going to be 2.28 or 2.16. And it is sounds like is going to save some money on fuel, but is 2.28 any good for hauling 80k? If anyone has experience with it, I would like to know. Thanks
New Cascadia w/ Detroit Powertrain will it be good for hauling 80K?

Get 500hp and 3.55 if you are planning to haul 80k regularly. If driving in hilly area might even want to go 3.90

2.28plus 400 ponies plus 80k equals one slow uphill truck
Blagoje, W923, Phoenix Heavy Haul and 5 others Thank this. -

If you stay flat you regularly you will probably get by but I'd look for a better rig if you can.

HP sells the truck, torque pulls it down the road.
The newest DD15 engines can have almost 2000ftlbs of torque. Mine has 455hp (I think) and the newest engine with like 1950ft lbs of torque. At 80000 it does quite well as long as you're not trying to climb the side of a pyramid. I don't know any truck that was at gross that blew my doors off climbing the hills in NC. We were all slugs. Flat and level it does great. Small hills and such no problem at all. Even loooooong grades it only loses a few mph by the top. And my truck is governed, in one that isn't you could get a running start and do even better. -

My DD15 is at 455hp pulls well and decent fuel mileage. Former Prime truck setup for OTR , not sure the gearing.

Buying new, spec the truck properly for whatever your niche is. 505/1850 13 speed and 3.42-3.70 if running 295/75/22.5
That's where I'd start.
Edit: after looking at Detroit's specs is still listing the 15 as having 1750. Don't know why for Christ sakes the 13 L has 1850. I'd opt for dd13 505/1850. That motor is more than adequate for 80k and less. My take is you have less dpf/scr issues with a truck that hasn't had it balls chopped off. Lug lug lug, 400hp always struggling to get out of its own way and always down at max tq is not your million mile recipe.Last edited: Jan 6, 2019
