Morons are everywhere . You got to see a future Darwin award winner in action. Count yourself lucky she didn't get her award then.

 

In high school, I watched a friend repair a leaking fuel tank with that tank repair putty...laying in the driveway under his car, fuel running up his arm, and a lit cigarette hanging from his lips.

Nothing happened.

 

You can drop a lit cigarette into a puddle of gas and the only way something will happen is if you're near Hollywood.

Static electricity is more dangerous.

Still not a good idea.

This is a little off topic ... years ago while partying at the creek we had a fire built . A friend of mine ... drunk.... announced that fire ain't big enough. He takes the spout off of a 5 gallon gas jug dumps it on the fire . It blew up in his face.. singed off most of his moustache, eyebrows and shortened the hair on his head by a couple of inches... and he just staggered back and says... Now that's a fire. Dummys are everywhere.

 

A bit paranoid maybe? I guess very few people understand what is needed to ignite any petroleum product!
I takes a balanced mix of heat-fuel-oxygen...also known in fire circles as the "Fire Triangle". Even though a cigarette burns at 285 degrees (F)...that actually should be phrased as "smolders" since there actually isn't any flame...anyway...you can toss a lit cigarette into a pail of gasoline and no fire...the liquid will extinguish the cig. Liquid gas is not what burns in a petroleum fire,it is the vapors from the surface,and those require a spark at 900+ degrees to ignite, at this temp, the fumes (vapors) burn off and also create a evaporating effect on the surface of the liquid,keeping the fuel side of the triangle complete, remove the heat or the oxygen....no more fire.
Filling the tankof a car, or a gas can will not create enough fume (vapor) to ignite at the end of the fill pipe, oxygen ratio is far to high and the heat is insufficient.
Just remember the definition of "FIRE":
The rapid oxidation of a combustable material with the evolution of heat and light.

 

This TRULY frightens me! It’s time to stop people who smoke and pump gas.
