Detroit Diesel 71 - 92 series fans

Detroit use to make a 1 cylinder for little generators.

 

I can ask a freind.... he has a 1 cylinder with factory generator. He rebuilds Detroit’s daily, he may know which bellhousing is needed.

 

I looked it up on youtube because I didn't believe it either. They are neat little engines.

 

Hopefully you saved the engine. Sometimes those are the real treasures.

 

I used to work next door to Beyer brothers in NJ.Every once in awhile,usually on a Friday they would take old 71's that were destined to go to the scrap yard and run them full runaway until it ran out of fuel. Then it would run on its own, sucking up the crankcase oil.Sometimes they'd just seize up and shut down,other times it would be like a full blown explosion.In any case it was very amusing.

 

We had a instructor in school who loved to pull the throttle wide open with a bungee cord on a 8v71 then take the wires on the jake’s position switch and twist them together. So Jakes were on full , and the engine was trying to accelerate at the same time! It walked its self on the run stand about 20 feet one day . Talk about sound.
