If you have questions about how the milk business works, you might want to ask @ad356 He hauls milk, and before that he worked in the milk plant. I'm sure he can give you any info you would want.

Milk doesn't start. Its always available for pick up. Not everybody can start at 5am, when farms arent done till 9 or you dont deliver till 3pm.
Like tomorrow for instance. Ill start at the first farm at 0800, 9 stops later loaded at 1230 and off to the dairy for a 3pm appt. Then start the second rt at 1830 and 8 stops later be done by 2130 and home by 2200, wake up and deliver that second load only the following day.
Rinse and repeat. -
We hauled to Greenspring in Downtown Baltimore for the Diary. We did not get "Screwed around" becuase it's first come first served, two lines at the bays. Two in, samples and odor challenges met, pumps on empty, cleaning and sanitizing later free to go ready for tomorrow.
I usually got there 11 or so am and on way home by two or three at latest. My day was essentially over when the sanitation process started with the steam etc.
The most challenging part of the farm for me is rock crawling with the walking beams on two farms. One farm had a 30 degree slope to the milk tank house connection. Sometimes the farmer broke out either a team of horses or a tractor to force my mack into position and then within hose length to connect. There are situations in which a full up 18 wheeler as strong as mack will just quit and sit and spin. It's amazing.
It was really a good job for me, but in the end I was disposible. One farm had bad samples and the Dairy man's coop in Sykesville was the enforcer of all things Milk in Maryland. They decided that I should be dismissed and given another route.
The following week one morning early Im being told to pivot the tanker trailer wheels in a 10 foot by 10 foot patch of gravel above a 400 foot ravine.
I got scared. You would think I am a mountain god. But nope nope nope and nope. Not for a million dollars.Mike2633 Thanks this. -

I deliver engines transmissioins and rear ends and pick up cores. Get up about 4 am, drive about 45 minutes to get get there abour 6:30 . get my electronic tracker up and get punched in, get a bunch of papers, inspect and load a truck with pallet jack , or forklift.
. drive around all day, try not to fall asleep around 2-3 pm . or until dark. unload a truck by hand with pallets jacks or some monster heavy electric one. get back after dark. do some more BS. drive home after dark hoping i dont wreck. get home around 9 pm. count my blesssings im working. I hit my 60 every week. some diesel engine loads are 1500 lbs on pallet jacks. i hit my 11 hours daily or whatever it is. its about 200-300 miles a day.Last edited: Jan 20, 2019
localguy65 and Mike2633 Thank this. -
Tell it. Most of us know you haul milk but you're not always on here patting yourself on the back and preaching to the choir.
If I had a question about hauling milk I'd ask you first.Blackshack46 Thanks this. -
