400 cummins information

These engines have a tag on the left front of the engine. List the serial number, HP, and CPL #. With that some folks around here and or Quick Serve call tell you most anything about them.
The 86 should be a standard timed engine with top stop injectors. The 90 is probably a step timed engine and I would pay equal money for the older truck if it is in about the same condition.
Just my opinion. post the numbers for better information.

 

With the last six of the vin a dealer should be able to tell you what engine came in it. No one knows if it still the same.
I like the old girl. It is probably an NTC and has mechanical injection. Good straight forward truck but likely geared for the 55 MPH speed limit.
The 90 has a set back axle. Much better turning radius and should ride better. Probably has an N14 and may have cruise. Parts should be available a bit longer.

 

That 86 looks like it's been loved and is in great shape.!!

The 90, well I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but might be fine too.

 

I have to agree with BoxCarKid on the 86', nice looking truck and getting rare, after a hard weeks work,you can take her to the show.I had an 84', longer wheel base,setback frt axle.400Cat, 9spd sprung rears, it was a real workhorse.Good Luck.

 

What's the truck going to be used for.

 

I like that 86. They were a sharp ride. If you spend much time in the bunk I believe you won’t be happy with a little bunk. A guy your size I believe would be best suited in a Pete Unibilt or a KW aero.
