Add the West Mountain Radio ClearSpeaker, boys. How many times I gotta tell ya?

And then you add the KL203 amp which ALL runs off the same factory power outlet: radio, speaker & 75W amp off 15A circuit

    Hear & Get Heard

    Couldn’t be simpler or easier.

    Besides some bonding,

Upgrade the coax (run it in flame resistant split loom). Seal all connectors.

Add a CMC choke at antenna feedpoint. Add another (coax filter) at Radio end.

A NAVONE 12V DC filter for power. More of the same split loom after an upgrade to amp wiring and Powerpole disconnects for all devices on same power harness.

The speaker makes all those other changes worthwhile. (Same for upgraded radio.) The environment is too difficult.

With the above I was seeing 75W forward & 1-w reflected from a pair of 7’ Skipshooters.

Hey, you could have an N4 version of the RCI 2970. You “might” get out farther . . . but you won’t hear as much or as well without DSP.

Of course, could move up to a YAESU FT991. If $1,200 is burning a hole in your pocket. DSP out the wazoo with buttons and sliders and menus. (Gotta take notes on the 47-settings).

Will look forward to what you find. Am thinking on buying a pair. Maybe more.
I’ve nothing to think they’re not a great price per performance .

Even a little DSP goes a long way. ESPECIALLY in noise-generating big truck.

That’s the way the OP Manual on my 885 reads: max RF Gain and adjust Squelch to cut noise.

    Okay.

I run the WM speaker and leave both wide open. (Has to be a GENUINELY bad place for me to turn up Squelch).

Can you adjust rf gain on your 980?

Have an 880 and 885. The Gain is adjustable on both.

I have gone back and forth with that speaker, I don’t have a budget when it comes to radio stuff, but $219 is just tough for a speaker. Then my friend on his base was at 8db from 50 miles away this morning on my 6 foot skipshooter. Decisions decisions.

I do have a choke on my base for neighbors close by, none on my mobile though.

Where can I get all that stuff? Do you have a reputable seller to purchase from?

    Slowmover1 Thanks this.

    Ha! Worried over pennies.

A higher fidelity mobile speaker is the:

    KENWOOD KES-5

Used by public service, etc. Mil-Spec for tough environments. Reputedly better than the Motorola’s.

About $50 with shipping. AND THEN an in-line DSP module. That’ll top your price quote.

Look at it this way (as I’ve shown before).

A nice used Yaesu or Alinco. $500 give or take.

    - 980 Uniden
    - RM ITALY KL203
    -WEST MOUNTAIN RADIO CLEARSPEAKER.
    $125 + $75 + $200

    $400

Good luck coming close to this performance with a typical CB/Export. Won’t happen without some help.

Until youse guys can clean up the noise with some DSP (can “hear around” what isn’t eliminated) you don’t know what you’re missing.

Not for mobile. Too much noise generated by the truck.

And all you do to alleviate that is MORE obvious with DSP.

I bought mine and a RigRunner 4005 from West Mountain.

I don’t like to think how much I spent last year at DX ENGINEERING. Both items can be acquired there also (request paper catalog; great website, but paper very handy).

Also recommend their new patent coax jumpers.

I’ve also spent with PALOMAR ENGINEERS. 12V Noise Filter, Coax Noise Filter (both installed by radio), and ferrite combinations for antenna feedpoint (CMC Choke) and large ferrite toroid for power leads at BATT FUSE. Plus more toroids for Wall Warts, etc.

Given my back-of-sleeper single antenna, you might find your rig a little embarrassing even with a good antenna system by jumping in & out of both trucks. RX & TX.
(And I’m not pushing that very hard).

    I’d imagine there’s a return policy.

But don’t be in a hurry. It’s can take a little time to figure out best use of the DSP Speaker. I’ve learned a few tricks.

You’ll be going back thru your rig to find problems. You’ll be going back they the truck to find problems.

Some of them you’ll solve. This time. Since without DSP you lose the prophylactic cover it provides.

I’ve ridded myself of some noise by focusing on making for the quietest environment possible for the radio to work within. The speaker makes SOME noise sources more obvious.

    The radio isn’t overwhelmed.

    Since my cB/Exports dont have the latest/greatest ICOM/YAESU DSP abilities . . .

    I added it outboard.

What about the KL203? From DX Engineering, I only see the LA-144 and LA-145.

    Slowmover1 Thanks this.
