I am currently looking around for a new to me truck. I will be pulling a 40 ton RGN for right now but will be planning on working my way up to 55 ton. Do I need to go ahead and get a 4 axle? If not can I stay with a 12k front and a 40k rear? I am having trouble finding any bigger axle tractors used.

I wouldn't waste time with 40k rears if you're pulling an RGN. Those are doorslammer axles IMO.

40k may be more than the typical legal weight limit but they also have lighter internal components as well. If you're off the pavement or are pulling heavy loads you might find the 40k's might not be up to the task.

Ehh it depends, this truck had 40,000 pound rears and the had a whole fleet speced the same. We could permit 47,000 then and now the get 50,000 and the run them 750,000 miles usually with minimal problems.

    This one had 38,000 rears.

Is heavier better? Probably but it can be done successfully.

I’ve got a bunch of pictures of it, that was my favorite truck I ever drove. I had two of them virtually identical just 5 years age difference.

Here it was when I picked it up,

Good to know. Was that a D10 on it? I would assume that they spec'ed the truck with less than 2050 torque as well to accommodate and/or prevent premature failure in a 40k or 38k rear.

Yes a D10 grossing around 120,000. 1850 torque but you could destroy a 46,000 rear with less torque. And you could successfully run 2050 torque with 38,000 rears.
