I've got a cummins N14 with 1.3 million miles on it. It,s in an IH 9400. 1998 model. When I'm going up thru the gears, there's a slight miss each time I change a gear and accelerate. It only lasts a second or two then smoothes out and runs fine. Pulls hills good(usually loaded around 79,500lbs.) and no miss even when pulled down to around 1200RPM's. When I downshift it picks up fine and I don't notice any hesitation. I thought maybe an injector. It idles good so pulling the electrical connectors from the injectors don't point at any specific injector. So I bought a temperature gun and found one cylinder that was about 30 degrees cooler than the others. I replaced that injector (no. 6) and still have same problem. Like I said it runs fine goin down the hiway. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I do my own work, but diagnostics is somewhat of an art that I don't have much talent for. Thanks, Mike.

Did you check or replace the pass-thru wiring harness from the injector?
xsetra Thanks this. -
On the driver side of the engine, there is a fuel relay with a wire going to it. Check that wire to make sure it’s not loose or grounding out on something, I had the same problem with my N14 and that was my issue.

I will. Thank you

Bad accelerator pump on your Holley?
-
HA! Thought it might be the plug wires!

CK cam and crank sen. if one is going bad it will run like that, its a low price part so put both in ?
BoxCarKidd Thanks this. -
OK thank you. I will check them out. Better safe than sorry.

No! Those usually show up under load. Glad you have a seance of humor.
I hope the sensors solve your problem.
It was not my idea and I struggled with it a bit at first. The sensors, wiring harnesses, switches that control them etc all wear out. Wire insulation you can see where it rubs on the plastic segmented cover. Fractures in the insulation you can not see. The wire strands break due to repeated movement.
Taking this idea to an unnamed rental company ( gas burners ) to share the idea. My numbers maybe off a bit. Regular services at 5K. Fuel air and ignition service at 25K. Hoses belts pack bearings and such at 50K.
Gear oil, water pump, starter and alternator at 100K.
If these guberment affiliated trucks remain forced on us we may need to follow that type model. Some of those things should be considered regular maintenance if we are going to keep them.
Does it ever seem slow to return to idle? Could be sucking air if it does. I thank those engines had a steel sleeve about half way down the center from the threads. Have the correct fuel filter?xsetra Thanks this. -
When you replaced injector, did your temperature in cylinder increase?
Did you check for air in your fuel system.
Higher rpm, more fuel needed.
My fuel filter head has o-rings on the line fittings. My motor acted like you described. Just a little air was seeping in during high RPM's.
Good luck.tommymonza Thanks this.
