I've done both (never knew 30 was restricted) and there's no question it's faster to go up to 581 Mechanicsburg over to 83 South than it is to go across 30.
30 is really nice once you leave 81. For the first 10(?) miles it's stop and go with lights then you get into the hills and it opens up. Great, right?
NOPE! From Gettysburg to just east of York it WILL be a slog, you'll get halfway up your gearbox only to get cut off by a local eager to drive at 10-15 under the posted. You'll average about 20 mph, probably takes an hour and a half to get from 81 to 83 via 30.
Much quicker to peg your limiter up towards Harrisburg then back down on 83 back to York.
Restrictions: Gettysburg on Route 30?

I was reluctant to take US-30 from east of I-81 to PA-116 and Hanover... For the reasons you stated, lights, slow traffic, stop and go, waste of time... that I don't have....
Even though I-83 will add 36 more miles to the trip, it may save some time and sanity... still... gotta take PA-116 west to Hanover.... but at the end it seems to be a quicker route.

I can confirm that that sign does exist but I see 102’s run through there a lot.
Rocks Thanks this. -
I am gonna be picking up in York and need to get to I-81 afterwards. Since GB has their restriction, is route 234 from York to the other side of GB where is joins rt. 30 is a truck route??

I'm gonna pass this along for what its worth.
One of my customers told me 53 footers are restricted, "they don't enforce it unless you hit something" that's what she told me word for word.
Now I've run straight thru town with 53's and even a car trailer which is 75 feet or more with over hang and never got bothered.
My buddy ran thru there regularly with a bull wagon and never got bothered. Not sure on his overall length but he had a stretched out big ride.
One thing you don't want to do is run thru there on a warm fall night on the weekend.....yeah that was a really bad idea on my part....It is a very busy little town !
Good luck and don't feed the bears ! -
Ive taken a ten thousand trucks through GB, even the square and no one paid me any mind. The only problems I ever had was on that very old vintage 30, the original route pavement itself dating to the beginning of roads. I remember that one drive clearly to this day. I needed a inch more to make room not to fall off it. And there was none to be had.
If you are coming out of york for 81, I assume you want 81 into Virginia and thence south and west into the rest of the USA wherever you are going.
Oxford has a circle or a town square rather. GB does too. And a number of other towns. I tell you what.
Run that 20 miles or so whatever it was straight to HB/Camp Hill area and work your way into I-81 and roll west-south. The very small northing you run to HB (Harrisburg) will be presenting you with a straight I-81 all the way down without the small town stuff and avoids the GB.
Your optional route is even smaller believe it or not.
As a local born and raised there I would have gotten into northern VA and then worked out to 81 my way. But Mansassas does not like it so you need to be on I-66 right quick west to strasburg VA 81. (Toms Creek etc)Last edited: Feb 7, 2019

The PA DOT does like to sit just past WalMart and grab drivers with 53 footers. Coming from York if you want to go south on 81 I would come on 30 over to US 15, go south just across the line into MD and get on Rt140 going west through the town of Emmitsburg. That becomes PA 16 goes through Waynesboro and dumps you onto 81 at Greencastle by the TA.

Wow. A 9 year old post responses. I'm impressed.
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
And you wonder why no one responds. Until I or someone else comes along. Usually I shoo em off to advice to build a stand alone thread.
TTR Staff really needs to consider tying off dead threads as archive to be read but not posted to. It only confuses people and throws us all off because it's been years past the original situation. -
And of course one of my favorite movie lines is: "I'm not dead yet!"
slow.rider and x1Heavy Thank this.
