Right-o. I wonder what that next contract will bring. The company has you by the you know whats, and whatever they say goes. When they try to go for the pensions, I guarantee you it goes through because guys that have already been on the job wont give two craps about the guys below them so long as they will still have THEIR pension check coming in.
Honestly, how long you think the pension holds out? They recently took it away from management. Its only natural that they next go after the drivers.
How does UPS Freight keep drivers???

If you don’t want the job don’t take it. I personally hate progression, but if a job has it and you know it going in to it then that’s what it is. It is a free world and no body will make you take it or really cares if you do. Nothing in life worth anything comes without some level of sacrifice!Last edited: Feb 10, 2019
Mike2633 Thanks this. -
I left the job bc I knew it was bull. Im now working with a construction outfit expanding my skill set working dump truck, open deck trailers, and hauling equipment. I have some other apps in in the meantime, so we'll see what pans out. Its not even been a year since I left the military, so I'm still fresh in the game and finding my way.
The guys that have been on the job and have a good amount of years under their belt for freight are either legacy overnite guys or drivers that didnt have to deal with the worsening contracts. I just dont see how they keep new drivers coming in that have to deal with the effects of worsening work conditions negotiated by the union. -
A four year progression instead of three isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. In your third year at freight your still making 63 cpm which is way more than you'll make at most other driving jobs.Mike2633, Bob Dobalina, LtlAnonymous and 1 other person Thank this.

I'm not a legacy Overnite guy.... Worsening working conditions?
if a driver doesn't get to run now they get to work the dock for 36.70 an hour. You get that whether your on top pay or the first step in progression.
Same price for insurance that I had in 2008 when our first contract was ratified.
Almost 73 cpm and 28.85 per hour and paid that rate for everything. Drop, dock, delay, breakdown, fuel, etc...
A fleet of brand new trucks in my terminal and quite a few others. Even buying all automatics to cater to the new guys.
It's not a perfect job but what really is.Mike2633, Bob Dobalina and De Trucker Thank this. -
I hear you. But theres a reason why that contract was voted no by what, 80% of the workforce?? Then for the company to run out the system like it did? Nah, thay doesnt fly with me. They have a two tier system now and a pittance for pay increases. I guess guys should be lucky that that 2400 hour a year requirement didnt go through.
What kills me is the company nor the union EVER let out in writing what the profits for freight are. Whats so hard about putting out statements as per GAAP that show what freight is making per year? Why the smoke and mirrors?
I guess what it comes down to for me as what value do you place on yourself. If you want to get treated like a jerk because you still get scraps from ups's table, then thats fine. I just couldnt see myself devoting my life to a company like that after seeing how they handled the contract situation, and seeing how they treated the workers like slaves.speedyk Thanks this. -
Ups and ups freight are different companies. Ups pays way better

We don't have a two tier pay system. Guy that starts today makes the same as I make in four years.LtlAnonymous and De Trucker Thank this.

Don't tell me what the company has me by. Like I said I've been in this industry for quite a while. Get some experience and come back to me.
Why I say that is because you're gonna learn the hard way that most other companies will work you harder for less.
You have under a year of experience? You're on your 3rd company?
You're gonna eventually find out that the grass IS NOT greener on the other side.
By then you woulda wasted a bunch of time where you could a been top rate at UPSF.Mike2633, Bob Dobalina and LtlAnonymous Thank this.
