Not saying I recommend buying a truck, but if you're going to buy a 99 or older get either the 60 series detroit or the N 14 cummins as both engines are well known for reliability and economy. A freightliner with a detroit and Eaton fuller 10 speed is a bare bones rattle trap of a truck, but it will most likely be as reliable of a truck as you'll find in my opinion

For 50k you should be able to find a decent pete or kw with a fairly recent overhaul, if you're willing to drive a freightliner or Volvo you should able to find one of those for a little less. Look around on truckpaper a little, you'll be shocked at what some people think that pre 2000 motor is worth.

    OK another one.

Where are these guys coming from.

Hate to burst your bubble but read my reply a few times to sink in. Oh and read what others say.

You won't have much of a choice. ELD are not bad, if you can create a thread here, you can use an ELD. it is that simple.
That ain't going to happen. Period. it isn't an RV, it isn't a vacation transport device, it is a tool to make money with.

No you can't, experienced fleet owners like myself sometimes have a difficult time to find a driver and if you don't get the right on, you have to manage that person which makes it a full time job.

But then you want to be a slave to your truck?

Here is a suggestion, get your CDL if you haven't, get hired onto a company that will give you 4 to 5 years of experience and learn from them how this all works.

Whatever your budget for this idea is just send me the money. In 12 months you will be in the same spot, no money and no truck.

Lol ok. Maybe i shouldent buy a truck and just work for someone else? So i am also building an house with extra bedrooms to rent out in 2020. But seriously this is that hard of business isent 50% of OTR trucks owner operator?

I understand my one huge disadvantage of buying an old truck is that they break down more often and i cannot turn a wrench. Even if i did learn how its gonna take me a long time to figure that out.

If i buy a truck pre1999 and get a decent one how do i know the overhaul was done right? Is there other things besides transmission and engine type such as rust that may be an issue?

I appreciate the pessimism because i dont want to do this if it wont be worth it. I do like plan B better at this point and just buying a truck thats already overhauled its just i want to make sure it was done right and confirm miles since
    It was done etc.

If your going to leave a review saying i may as well just send you my money then please let me know your experience. I know how to drive and know how to run a small business. That being said i know #### about trucks or mechanics. Is this enough to make this less exonomical of venture than working for a company locally? I simply cant work OTR longterm for a company cause i have other #### going on. I dont see why i cant rent my truck to a friend and get a cut of the profits when im not driving. The thing is i dont plan on driving 50 weeks out of the year or w.e they require so the flexibility of being my own boss is the main advantage to owning for me here.

The ELD thing is more about the restrictions. Maybe thats not a competitive enough advantage to be able to run paper logs to buy a truck this old? It seems to me this is a way i can get more miles while on the road the limited time i will be. Also can allow a friend to drive how they want. I have lots of experiance working 14 hour days and dont like the idea of sitting at a rest stop half my days simply cause the government dosent trust im alert enough even if i KNOW i am.

Also i find it hard to beleive it has to be a 40 hour a week job to manage one truck operating off apps/broker services. I would just turn this responsibility to the driver and take a small cut.

Bro, you need to listen to everyone else here. You have to get your experience first. You have never even gone OTR. That's the first thing. Buying a pre 1999 truck is craziness if you know nothing about trucks. The elog is a thing of today. It's not hard. Go call one of these companies and get experience....learn how all of this works

yawn ... here we go again.

Another one who wants their ideas validated.

This tells me you are not serious enough about it, just clueless and refusing to hear what others who know have to say about it.

Keep your money in the bank, Drive for a few years as a company driver, that should clear you up pretty quick before you make the royal mistake of going Owner Operator. That 50K you say is available will evaporate so fast.... Then there is taxes to pay and everything else way too much to itemize here.

People with no experience in this industry must avoid doing Owner operator or leasing. They must gain a few years experience as a driver to begin to maybe see a little bit of what's out there. IF they make it that far.
