Volvos?

    How good are Volvos? Either with there own engine or the cummins enginee..which is better to have? Is it true that they have a lot of electrical problems? What are the most common problems?

    Nothing further from the truth for someone who spends half his life in it. Only those who may only own it but don't use it can think like that. NOT just a tool --- hell of a lot more!

    If I were going to buy a Volvo, I would opt for the Cummins. And for really only one reason. You can find a shop (and parts) that works on Cummins on every street corner, so to speak. With a Volvo engine, you may get lucky from time to time and find a shop that can work on it. But most often, it's going to be headed to the nearest stealership. Of course, while under warranty, you'd probably be headed to the stealership anyway.

    I should add that this doesn't apply to every repair job on a Volvo. The diesel engine is fairly well the same regardless of manufacturer. But the DEF and auto trans etc are not.

    Comfy, quiet and ergonomically best. Good for tall and XXXL people. Engines are like with any other trucks - a matter of luck and maintenance schedule.

    We have a few volvos and our biggest issue is that if we do need a part or any maintenance done otr apparently no one has volvo parts or some mobile services will even refuse to work on it because its a volvo. otherwise our volvos are our best kept trucks-very basic issues.

    Meh, Volvo's get a bad rap, but I guess they're ok. Lot's of guys like them, but lots of guys liked the Freightliner cabover too. I only drove the older ones, that were highly generic. They all have basically the same parts underneath, so to say one truck is better mechanically than another is silly. Comes down to what cab you like best in trucks.

    I get what you are saying but my post is the truth.

    its JUST a tool, it depends on what matters to you that makes it a decision to buy but it is only a tool.

    You don't date it, you don't take it to a hotel after a movie and drink, you don't marry it.

    It is a tool.

    You get overly emotional about it then maybe there's problem, it is just like a hammer or a drill ... a tool.

    If you spend half your life in it, that's a long time to spend in the cab of the truck. I think most of the trucks I own are seven years and newer, so ...

    A Volvo is just like any other truck, there is NOT much difference between it and a mack or a KW or a pete or a WS, they are all the same, they move the same, they break down the same, they get the same mileage and they haul the same weight.

    They are no better than the next one.

    Because it is just a tool.

    If you want to discuss the what really matters, it isn't the engines or the electrical but what Parkway alluded to - the dealer/parts supply is limited in some areas and good service is hard to find.

    I own macks, I love my macks and I have had volvos that were bought through fleet purchases, they gave good service but even mack dealers would not be able to fix them when they gave me problems.

    I've owned 3 Volvos in the past, first one was a 1999 770. Detroit 60 series motor, put a million miles on that truck and only thing it was in the shop for was a turbo and regular maintenance.
    2nd one was a 2008 780 with Volvo d16 had a wrecker follow me constantly ( jk ) because it was always in the shop, it was one thing after another going wrong with that truck.
    3rd was a 2012 vnl 300 .d 16 with ari sleeper. Replaced injectors and cups with updated ones, that was only problem i had with that truck.
    Biggest problem I had with Volvo, was the dealerships not having mechanics who knew what they were doing, and the time it took before dealers could get your truck in to work on it, plus they never had the parts.
    I now have a 2019 Western Star and from first time i had to turn on ac while in Florida it didn't work, tried to get it into a shop from Florida to Tennessee and none could get me in for at least a week or two.
    So at the end of the day it doesn't make one bit of difference what you buy, if you can't get the #### things worked on .

    I don't know if they're a good truck or not, I've never driven or owned one , but I do know two things, they don't hold their resale value and there's an awful lot of them out there rollin'.
