Here is a tip, you obviously are aware that you have to upshift by a certain RPM and down shift before the engine RPM gets too low.
In the case of stopping quick, almost too quick to follow down the tree you already indicated you know about taking several gears down because you are stopping quick.
What I do is not common, I stay in a gear until shes at 800 RPM which is just about idle. Then stab it going into Neutral. I should be able to get at least three gears down. But the rpms have to be way up there. Some times the stop is just too fast and you stay in gear for as long as possible and then nuetral before stop anyway.
Manuals are good. But you will find that if you had to slow down fast in a auto, it will follow you down and have a gear ready for you when you add power. It will take a moment to come on.

6th gear is my go to gear when I have to jump down a bunch of gears quickly. It is the lowest gear in the high range, so you dont have to move the range selector. It is 15 mph....hit the brakes until you get to 15 mph on your speedo, get to neutral, pop the throttle and touch the gears lightly and you will slip into 6th gear, with or without using the clutch.
Practice it. Make 6th gear your best friend. Treat 6th gear nice...you dont want to wear her out. Do it until it is so easy, you want to always shift into 6th gear. There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there is only one gear you should love ❤️ and it is 6th gear! Smile every time you go into 6th gear! Ahhhhh, that is so nice, just being in 6th gear! Always give 6th a gentle touch ❤️, make it your happy time when you are in 6th....sing her a song ....enough said, you get the idea!
If you need to be going slower than 15 from a high gear, then brake down to 5 mph and go into 2nd gear as you slow from 5 mph.
This way you always know you have only two choices to make, either 6th gear or 2nd. With 6th being your best girl, you always want to try her first. If you miss her, then slow some more and go for 2nd gear. You should be very confident and know it will become as easy to skip gears as it is to downshift a gear at a time.

I seen a guy one time they put in my truck when he went to pull out he was just trying to put the transmission into gear without even pushing down the clutch from a dead stop. I watched him grind the gears for about 30 seconds. I would have stopped him but I couldn't resist, I was blown away by the stupidity. Finally I said what's that thing down there by your left foot.

You just need to get used to the transmission so that you know about what road speed your in what gear.
Be very gentle and try to just feel for the gear without the clutch. Absolutely do not force it. If you are in too high or too low of a gear you feel the way that the gear feels won't be right. If worse comes to worse pull over and start over again, or almost slow down and go to 2nd or 3rd gear and start again.
It's really just getting to know your transmission. After a bit you'll just know at what speed you need to be in what gear. Then it's just a matter of matching your RPMs and it will fall in like butter. -

Theoretically, its doesn't do the tranny any good. Realistically, it will still out last the useful life of the original truck owner. What really screws em up is forcing them into gear. If you are in the right hole, a little grinding will not hurt anything. You will get better as you go. Some trannies don't like be shifted without double clutching either. All the Fullers shift fine without touching a clutch pedal but I've seen some Spicers that were very touchy about shifting without double clutching. It seemed like the gate width was small and hard to hit without a lot of practice in the truck. Remember too that engine rpm fall varies with motor type etc.etc.

I remember visiting a truck driving school that Matlack was doing at a school with an old runway for a practice strip. We put 'top ten percent' driving school grads thru another two week school pulling tankers 1/23 full of water on the runway before 30 days of OJT training..
I sat in on a spicer sponsored film on 'Progressive Shifting' where the showed the added wear 'they said' comes from floating the gears. The damage was to the inside spline where the gears slide on the main transmission shafts.
Grinding will wear and possibly, over time, damage the outer gear teeth where the individual gears mesh to connect the input shaft to the driven shaft. Tractors with PTO driven accessories always grind as some of the shafts are still moving.
You can stop this with the clutch brake and placing the gearshift in to a gear to stop the turning shafts and the PTO will quietly click into gear but most drivers don't know this and grind away several times a day.
Them gear teeth are pretty strong.
