Driving In The Military

    I am not saying you are (wrong) as you gave your thoughts and how you opined this, I am also aware you only said a civilian company I am the one adding OTR. I think to try to be an OTR trucker and being in the reserves or Guard maybe a serious mistake. Yes, I know that weekend a month and the summer drills can be arranged around. However, as a reservist or a guardsman, your unit can be called out on very short notice. I have been told that the National Guard is exempt NOT nationalized from the Posse Comitatus act. I do not know if this applies to the reserves. This means your unit can be called out anytime the Governor deems them critical to keep the peace! While I am sure there are other members of these units that travel and the same thing can be applied to them. Know this though. If you miss enough formations for being out of the state at some point the unit is going to toss the person out and most likely place that person on inactive reserve. I have seen this done. And if you think about it, what use is a person as a reservist or a guardsman if they are constantly out of the area? Regional and Local work is great, OTR give some LONG HARD SERIOUS thought before doing!

    There are a few truckers by my house with their own trucks, I might be able to ask them a few questions and they might be able to help me out. What should I ask them?

    Notice they're all the same height and size. Just as with airline stewardess, in China they take measurements to ensure they're all the same size. They can actually wear each others clothes because the women are the same size.
    Can't do that in the USA because it's not politically correct.

    I retired from the Navy as a E6 EO Seabee. I got out some time ago but the bee's are basically the same. If you go in right after your A-School you be assigned to a Battalion and you'll do 4 years there. You will see a lot of trucks but the drivers are usually E5 and E6's. You'll do a lot of construction and you'll go overseas. There are 2 places where the Battalions are, 1 is Port Hueneme CA and 2 Gulfport MS.

    The Battalions do a 6 month turnaround. You'll be in your Home port for 6 months then you'll deploy where ever they go. You'll learn how to run all the heavy equipment the Navy has plus see far away places.

    As Far as Truck driving they use trucks to move equipment and supplies to where ever the military training is held. I was in a west coast Battalion so our training was mostly at Fort Hunter Ligget CA. It was a couple hundred miles from the base. Way back when I was driving 70's and 80's we drove GMC's two strokes with twin sticks. You can drive, it all depends if your qualified and they are short drivers. You will however get a license to drive OTR.

    After the Battalion it all depends where you go if you'll drive or not. You could get lucky and get stationed at the Recruit headquarters in Wash. DC. Now there is where the driving takes place. They go all over and the trucks are civilian types. After I left the Battalion I got station at a research and development base with EOD and did a lot of driving OTR. I was the only Seabee there and the base had heavy equipment all over. I rented a Ryder Tractor and move all the equipment to one place. I was gone for months but it was driving. It was fun to walk into Ryder and say "I need a tractor so here's $10,000".

    That's just a half of what the Seabee's do. The other half you'll do with an M4 in your hands. The Seabees protect what they build. We are defensive in what we build and not offensive. WE have the Marines for that. So you won't knock on any doors and such. We have 1 Seabee that got the Medal of Honor and his name is Marvin Shields and he was in VietNam.

    If you're the military type I recommend the Seabee's. But I also recommend that you do 20 years and retire then go out driving a truck. You'd be surprised on how many companies want military. I got lucky and went to work for a major oil company and then retired from them.

    First of all there is no guarantee you will get your choice of a specific MOS. Far from it. So you shouldn't be joining the military for that purpose ....it should be well down the list of reasons to enlist.

    Regardless of what branch you join, you can do troops 2 truckers just before you get out. It gets you a CDL at no cost to you.
