The good part is you're paid for everything you do; paid to wait for trailer washout, paid for loading, paid for unloading and many other pays.

Some suggestions as you start your new career:
Make sure you work for a company that pays on a W - 2. Stay away from companies or individuals offering a 1099 job. Don't assume...ask!
Get the name and email address of all the recruiters you talk to. Keep a notebook.
Make sure that you stipulate that you are interested in being a company driver only. Stay away from companies trying to push a lease or lease purchase on you. Learn the industry first.
Find out what the base pay is for the position you want and how many miles a week or what the average weekly gross earnings for new drivers are. Beware of come on's such as "earn up to..."
Find out how sign on bonuses work and how long they take to pay out
Know exactly what driving job your applying for and get a job description for each.
Find out who pays for Orientation and what is included
Stay away from any company that requires you to pay any monies up front.
Good Luck!Newb2019, bamakidd6, Truckermania and 1 other person Thank this. -
Several flatbed companies have terminals in Birmingham. Boyd, Melton, Hornady, and others. You are in a good area for good flatbed companies.
You have also given you some good leads on non-flatbed companies and pay attention to the advice @Eddiec gave you.
Best of luck in your search and let us know where you end up.bamakidd6, Truckermania and Eddiec Thank this. -
If your interested in flatbed Roehl has a decent flatbed division. We have plenty of coast to coast runs if you stay out more than 11 days at a time. I'll pre warn you though that anyone with no experience is required to sign a contract. Overall I have no complaint about the company although I'm in the Dryvan division the rest of my classmates are either curtainside or flatbed. They are all over the place where I kind of only run East of I35. A lot of our freight comes from Oregon and California. Although we dont have many terminals they have no problem dead heading you home if they cant find you a load to go home with I often have to do it because of where I live in Florida all of our business is leaving and not really going to Florida

Great Thread!. So who did you end up going with bamakidd6?

Thanks a lot, I still haven’t chose a company but I have narrowed down to a few. Certain circumstances gave a limited amount of options, eliminating some great companies but I’m not letting it hold me back.
