Hi everybody. My brother and I recently completed the process of getting our operating authority. We bought a brand new Volvo 860 and we're getting set up with a reefer trailer that we will rent month to month. We'd like to run it hard with the reefer until the seasonal demand for reefers drops of a little in July and then look into car hauling.

Neither of us have car hauling experience, but we've both done OTR flatbed for about a year each. Can anyone point us in the right direction for info that we could research about dispatchers, load boards, what rates are like, etc? We'd really appreciate any input, thanks!

Best advise I can give you, focus. If you want to pull a reefer do that, if haul cars do that, but jumping here and there and everywhere is not sound business.

We were looking to finance a new reefer trailer, but we didn't really like the banks offer so we've decided to just rent one for now, and we will probably commit to that for at least 3 months. We plan to hit it really hard those first 3 months until we've saved up some decent cash reserves. At that point we will put a significant portion of those savings down on a trailer. Whether we go for a car hauler or reefer has not been decided yet. We won't be switching between the 2... and I agree, that would be a really bad idea.

Also you would have to physically move the 5th wheel and remount it to the rear to accommodate the trailer, most likely buy longer lines... oh and if you dont have 2 years under your DL, you might be hard pressed to finding an insurance company. Count in expenses like straps, chains, bar, measuring stick for starters too.

I wonder how OP and his brother are doing now. Hopefully they did not kill each other yet doing a business together and driving as a team
