we've had this problem twice now. both on very hot days in texas, that's the only similarity we can come up with. seems to happen pretty randomly. when we leave the truck sitting for 15-30 min and turn it back on, none of our gauges work. no RPM, no MPH, no oil pressure, no coolant. the air pressure works though.
when it happened the first time, we tried turning the truck off and on every few min, multiple times, it didnt fix itself. the screen shows a check engine and an abs light. after leaving it for 5-6 hours, when it got dark later in the evening we started the truck and it finally went away.
a week later its now happening again, a hot sunny texas day, 100 degrees, we got pulled over by DoT for 15 min and we cranked the truck back up, no gauges. well, we can't sit on the side of the road so we're gonna drive it to the next truck stop and see what we can do.
when it happened the first time, we put it in the shop and told them about it, along with many other problems, half of all weren't fixed (gotta love werner's terminal mechanics), and i guess this wasn't fixed either. my guess is that the mechanic turned the truck on and said "well, looks like they're working now" and that was that. this isn't a consistent problem which is why it makes it so hard to pin point and fix.
i think it might have something to do with the heat and a sensor somewhere making it malfunction, or maybe its just a coincidence that it happened in texas twice now, and no other states. but i'd love to know how to get rid of this problem when it does happen. having it sit for six hours maybe reset the trucks computer, and i'd love to know how to do it manually.
thanks

In my 08 389 the dash is controlled by a computer. Had some problems and Ptb. did an ESA update,no more problems.
-
What's ths ESA update? Don't know anything about it, and I doubt werners retarded mechanics will either.

From this article...
"The new multiplexed electrical system is supported by Peterbilts Electronic Service Analyst (ESA), a computer based diagnostic tool which accurately monitors the electrical system, isolates sensors and gauges, and maintains an event log for historical purposes. ESA enables technicians to review codes stored in the components, verify instrument functions to accurately pinpoint a malfunction, and quickly troubleshoot dashboard electronics." -

I found the Issue. It was the computer harness on mine. The one that says dash harness coming out of the computer because there's 2 come out from the computer. Had the exact same problem, my mph gauge would say no data and 5 gauges were not working, the needles on 5 gauges would swipe like whipers and there were red lights staying on. Just tighten up the harness coming out from the computer, or clean the pins/connector up. Make sure it has no dirt and it should work. I have an 09 peterbilt 387 c15 acert no dpf. If that doesn't work, check the wire con the back of the dash that says smc, should be on the speed metor on the back, follow that wire to the firewall located on the bottom driver side when the pedles are at, check for damaged wires or try messing around with the firewall plugs, might be a lose connection as well from there. If not, check behind the glove blox, there is a smc box there, on the top it should say light bar, dissconect and clean the pins there as well since that also sends data to the dash. Hope this helps
iggybest Thanks this. -
