I was driving at night and it wasnt my usual route. I turned down a road following my gps. The road wasnt lit well. The overpass topped my trailor like a sardine can. There qas no clearance sign on the overpass. The sign was actually 1/4 mile down the road but was covered by a tree branch. I didnt see it until after the fact. When the cops came i was told that im the 40th trucker this year to hit the overpass. I was told its up to corporate if i get fired for it. But i was told to also come in to recertify. So i am a bit confused. Im nervous.

Well i cant speak for your company but that can be legit. I had a driver tap a bridge, we pulled him off the road, he had to retake every qualifier again. Including a road test. Once done he was placed on probation. Since then he has come off probation and is doing fine.
Bravo5 Thanks this. -
I hope thats the case. Its my first accodent with coke and my forst as a trucker. i hope i dont get fired for this.

ok, no matter how many other hit that overpass, it is YOU that needs to know what happens next.
this is (to me) a huge problem with people relying solely on GPS, and NOT taking out a truckers road atlas and verifying routes for low clearances.
many times, a driver is told to "come in" to simply return the equipment, then be fired.
it is rather rare one is given a second chance.
this will be investigated by your company's insurance people. now, i'll bet you a dollar to donuts, they do not find that tree branch to be a problem.....it'll most likely be cut back, by the time they get there.
meaning, "there was no reason not to have seen it"..
now however, if you walked back and took pics of that low hanging tree branch, that might save you.
if on the police report you said there was a low hanging tree branch, that might save you.
but "on average", rolling a truck over or topping a trailer are bonafide fireable offenses......x1Heavy Thanks this. -
depends if that is a union shop, and you made the union roll....
if you did not make the union roll, the union cannot help you, since you're a "probie"
some soda companies are union (up here they all are), but in the south, i don;t believe too many are. -
My opinion, if it is really your first, and you are spotless otherwise, i wouldn't worry to much. The rule with accidents is simple
Be honest.
Answer every question.
Dont volunteer information or wander.
Dont speculate.
Own the mistake, but have a plan to ensure it doesn't happen again.tinytim Thanks this. -
