It sounds to me like you are proving that CB HF signals are not line of sight, like some folks believe. Since your signal is having to hop over the mountains, so to speak. The VHF/UHF signals are classified as line of sight.
Of course there's a lot more involved when it comes to band conditions.
Explain this propagation

Unless your gonna go all techy on me even his at 6666 is a 10/11m radio that operates on the cb band and is still barefoot....Its not powered up with an amp but a lil more than 4 watts and still barefoot..
Lotsa guys on the roads who cant do much more than 30 mi WITH an amp...Heck i ran into a fella who bragged how much power he was runnin..Forget his radio but had a sweet 16 with a predator 30k....Yes he had the super cool peteatude to go along with it but after 5-8 mi he was lost...Thought it mighta been me till someone asked if anyone else could hear him..
No amp on my 955 and rabbi and i went 40 mi..rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Here's the terrain. Lots of obstacles.

AT-6666 advertises 15 watts on AM.
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
With the Matched transistors I think mine is doing about 20 on am. 15 sounds about right for a stock radio although much of it is going to waste.
-
Thats a untouched radio, fresh from factory..Huge difference when properly set up..
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
I'm sure you noticed the lack of noise in my receiver And the fact I was listening to someone talking well below everyone else's noise level. If I had the same amount of noise everyone else had, I would have lost him within 20 miles.

Of course. That's why I said advertised. Tweak it any way you want after purchase

Yeap...My 955 with some tweeking makes lunch..lol

I have to run over to the Low Country tomorrow. Might use my 655 on that trip
