Steers are not necessarily limited to 12k. They limits vary state to state or province, also goes by lowest rated component be it tire or axle. So if a state/province allows 18,000 your axle is rated for 14,600 and tires are rated for 15,600 you are limited by the 14,600 rated axle.

I am under the impression that most guys that run spreads really don't do it to exceed 80,000, more so they do it to avoid being hung by certain loads that won't scale per axle if you are asked to split them, at least that is why we used to run them.

Weight on a 10 ft tri axle is 43,500 lb.

Oregon has their OWN version of the bridge formula.

Lots ot states allow you to go over 80K with divisible loads when registered for the appropriate amount, with the appropriate axles. Some require an additional "over weight" permit.

Easiest way to find out which states permit over 80K is to register your IRP weight above 80,000. Those states that don't allow divisible loads above 80,000 will print out at 80,000.

The Spread axle is a great advantage. My Ravens could carry loads that would not be possible to scale with a equivalent 48' steel-wood deck freuhauf flatbed tandem.

Ive also seen spread axle van or reefers in this work, you can throw whatever you like however you want it into those things and not worry about being say 40,000 pounds back there. As long you are at 80K gross and 34K on your drives, no problem.

A lot of flatbed loads are usually rear heavy.

And most loads don't have a way to scale properly.

A 10 ft. spread is a really nice cushion to have.

Bridge Formula Weights- FHWA Freight Management and Operations

At the bottom of the linked page shows some examples and lays out how they are counted and added up. Should help.

As some above have stated. Steer axle weight requirements may very based on state. Like in kansas. They have no state max for steers. But. You can not exceed. 1. Max rated weight of the steer tires. And 2. You can not exceed 10,000lbs. Per tire touching the road. Ofcourse you'll hit the max rated tire weight before reaching the 10k per tire limit. :D
