Can you be fired for bending a mudflap?

I once got stuck in the mud because I followed the customers instructions with a turn around point to get into the dock. Heavy rain the night before, and...
Instead of calling the company to report it and ask for help at their expense, I called a tow truck to get me out - at my own expense.

Was that dishonest on my part, or was I just accepting my own responsibility and dealing with?
It is the same with a simple bump against a pole, is it not?

Ive got pictures where I managed to rip off a inside fender mud flap on the left front once. I had managed to trap a 18 wheeler against the trailer versus top of trailer on a 9 inch drop off curbing of a trapezoid style dock pavement which was really screwed up. Just a single dock. But the illusions of the area was mind bending to me. So I had a tow coming to retrieve me but managed one last jerk to bounce front end up and over. She did it. But that flap went. We fixed it eventually. Due to electrical panel being pretty close on the firewall etc. Canceled the tow.

 

I am just guessing that its the hanger with the spring inside the large type mudflap hanger, and not the square iron type?

Yes, I have hit many things through the years. Been fired twice for it, most of the rest were "Eh, s--t happens. But you lose your next two months safety bonus."

I always reported it if I couldn't fix it myself.

When I worked for a transit authority, not reporting ANY contact with a stationary object would get you fired on the spot. Even a small scrape. You couldn't take the chance that some ###-kissing rat saw it and was on the way to report you to management before you even stopped the bus.

 

I came through a small mountain town on the backroads of TN one night. I can’t say it for 100% certainty. But I’m pretty sure they had to reinstall a few Christmas lights that were attached to poles, and hanging out into the street

I don't like the word "can" in your question title. I think a better much more suitable word is "will". The answer to that question depends on you and your history with the carrier. If the safety critters are using your mug for a dart board then yes you might be on your way out. Otherwise forget about it and go back to work. AND STOP HITTING FIXED OBJECTS!!
