I know when I turn 21 I want to start running my own truck pulling flatbed but I can't decide what I should do after I graduate until I'm 21. I could haul grain locally until I can legally go out of state but is it possible to get commercial insurance at 18? I kind of want to go to college for diesel tech but I hate school and that would be 2 years of spending money instead of making it.
College or trucking, what to do between 18 and 21?

Ehhh, diesel school is a coin toss. Like everything in life you have good and bad. 4 years in school and the only thing I learned was how to scroll down a page and click answers on a computer screen.
Want to learn to work on them, find a shop and apply to be a PM tech. Sure you're changing oil and filters all day but when the line techs need help, that's your opportunity to learn. I promise you'll learn more changing oil all day than you'll learn sitting in a class for 4 years. Want to learn what you'd learn in class, go to the library and get a book... It's free.
If you decide you want to drive and not turn wrenches for the next 2 years, find something that will count as experience. In my experience companies don't count CDL exempt agriculture jobs as experience.Mike2633, Rideandrepair, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -

I had enough of cabovers for a variety of good reasons, one in particular not covered by the medical DOT exam. Ive got a certain lack of vision in the eyes where if a car got into that spot they risk a really good chance to get totaled. I don't have that problem in the conventional.
Ive done some college not too long ago and found myself taking courses to take courses. Waste of money. Between the two of us I cut bait and the spouse got her worthless 4 year at a total cost of 46000. Its paid for free and clear with the sale of our debt free house. Very expensive.
Trucking it's easier. Not everyone can or want to do it. But that College is something that has turned into something that is not for you and me. Not at the enormity of the debt that crushes the younger graduates. Some of whom continue on to 6 years and 8 years etc trying to get a leg up on 10,000 others doing the same thing.Rideandrepair, Cabover9670 and D.Tibbitt Thank this.
