Just got off work so Im delayed to respond.
I know a few people driving trucks who have served time making a great career in the business.
As for my licences...never had one before.
    Strange but true...
I know there are lots of people who drive most their lives without licences.
Some things only become barriers if you allow yourself to believe that they are.

    austinmike and x1Heavy Thank this.

It's not so much as a barrier back then. It was not a problem. Today it would be more of a problem because for lack of a better way to say it, the State would prefer you to be tagged and monitored so to speak. It's getting to where you almost cannot do whatever without permission in some form. It's two different lives Ive seen, one before 9-11 (And certainly without any computers) and one after 9-11.

Heck babies get social security numbers now when they have no need of them. I don't know if it is required of them or not. I did not get mine until 18. Which opens a interesting can when you get into deafness related programs in Social Security. (Im actually still working on that...)

Or the small stuff like Power Jacks on the docks. Years ago you grabbed one and unloaded your trailer in 15 minutes and then went ahead and counted all of it before it was accepted by the dock lord. Now you are told get a Manual, you aint touching a electric anything without certification. And it's almost a state secret to get one at all.

Barriers. Ha. That would be a pretty topic for discussion I reckon.

I understand your point. Big difference between traditional trucking and contemporary trucking as far as policy and laws.
Not so much eed tape back in old days.
Hell, BJ & The Bear...Smokey & The Bandit made it look fun and thrilling to me watching them shows on TV as a kid.
The thing about all these new rules, laws and regulations is that its becoming to high of a bar for those who are intrested in becoming drivers today. But, the demand for drivers is greater today. Especially great quality drivers.
Mega companies are finding it very difficult to keep up their numbers to meet this demand. So many BS technicalities to disqulify people...and because of this the pickins are becoming slimmer and slimmer year by year.
Alot of the policies, laws and regulations are exaggerated beyond the scope of what they were intended for.
    Its obsolete many of them.
Im pretty sure their are reasonable reasons to have some in place.
