I saw one sweet rig hauling a Caterpillar D9T on a lowboy today. A D9T weighs around 105,000 lbs. Saw this truck and it's load down at the waterfront. Had a chance to talk to the driver for a bit while waiting for the escort vehicles to show up. He's running a 2004 Kenworth W-900. Has a 825 horsepower, specially build Caterpillar C-15. 18 speed trans, tridem drive with 2 speed 75,000lb rears. 86 inch studio sleeper, monster stacks, blue/white flame paint job, custom made polished stainless full fenders over the rears, polished aluminum headache rack, lights everywhere. Had the Texas front bumper. Everything on this truck was tweaked. Had an interior to die for. All the switches were chrome. Acres of wood, leather, polished stainless, aluminum, gauges out the ***, custom cabinetry, killer sound system, a real show stopper inside and out. Beautiful heavy spec truck. Wheels were outrageous, they had spinners shaped like circular saw blades. Minus the spinners I'd take a truck like that. Had twin, full polished fuel tanks with a 250 gallon capacity, each. D9T was supposedly going to Ft. Lewis. Love heavy equipment!

Anybody else see a cool rig? An unusual load?

I'll bet packrat was reffering to the CAT under the hood- he's a certified Cummins nut!
Sounds sweet- I would love to haul heavy equip. Was the engine actually modified, or did the driver just hook up a Pittsburgh power computer? Did they leave the treads on or off? Last time I saw something that big, it was being hauled w/o tracks (because it was already 10+ ft wide) by a tridem, with a jeep and a stinger.

ps- there's a D6 rumbling around about 50 ft from my house (they're widening the dirt road) and my darn house is shaking!

The neatest loads I've seen are- mine dumps, they transport them piecemeal, and there's still huge! Wind tower parts, the blades are cool and big too. I also saw an old wooden boat being transported once, I've got a picture of it under the photos thread.

Tracks were off the dozer along with the blade. Trackes and blade were on the same trailer, believe it or not. Blade was sitting on the front of the trailer and the tracks were "rolled" up behind it. I'm guessing the trailer was a good 75 feet long at least and it had a total of 8 axles carrying the load. Talk about your wide turns. Not sure what route they took out of downtown. Downtown Seattle is not built for oversized loads! If I had to guess they took Alaskan way to SODO and cut through the industrial district to I-5. Bet getting onto a military installation with a load like that was a trick too. With the concrete barricades and all. Wonder what they paid the driver? That kind of equipment costs some serious $$$$.

He said the engine was "custom built", course who knjows what that really means.

Another cool load to see is pressure vessels. In 1998 I worked a job putting a new steam plant in a power plant. The final size was 200 feet tall. They transported it in 50 foot sections that were 32 feet wide. The final route wound up being over 150 miles long, even though it was built less than 60 miles away. Had to avoid narrow roads, bridges all together and the like. They also had a portable crane with them because there were on and off ramps it had to be craned down and hooked back up. It wasn't mounted on a trailer either. They put a kingpin under the front (which we had to cut off) and strapped it to steerable dollies on the back. Took 3 nights to move it driving from 9pm to 6am. Local Teamsters handled that move so you know it was expensive. Highway patrol had to completely close the interstate and highways while it was on the move. What a job. I'd want at least $20 per mile for the headache involved!

In my opinion it takes a real trucker to handle a job like that. One wrong move and you've turned a multi million dollar, high tolerance load into a pile of scrap metal.

I have often wondered if one of the "Super Trucks" here in the US would be able to beat an Australian "Super Truck" at the World record of: Longest Road Train and heaviest load pulled attempting this record. As it stands right now, it's held by a Mack "Titan".

A D-9 isn't quite 105k with the tracks and blade off. That may make it 5-10k lighter. Usually those are moved on a beam trailer so it'll sit lower and not make removing the roll cage necessary. A beam trailer makes for a little bit lighter load too.

I'll tell you one thing. It's a wonder the cops didn't confiscate and void his permit upon seeing that he had other stuff on there too. Any load that can be reduced, must be.
