Today in trucking, it seems we have followed in line with society. There is very little ambition to excel as a professional driver, much like the standard "Aspiration to mediocrity" that stagnates our society these days.
Drivers should take a good hard look at themselves, and ask; "Am I the best I can be"? "Am I the best driver I can possibly be"?
Too many drivers these days are slobs, overtly rude, constantly complaining, argumentative, and generally people you just want to avoid.
I am not saying I am the "Best" driver out here, but I put my best foot forward every day no matter how tired or annoyed I am, and this has served me well in this industry for many years. I rarely get delayed purposely due to attitude, I always present a positive attitude and appearence, and I am not pushy or rude with other drivers, shippers, or consignees. I find this works well with police and DOT also.
I try to be the best driver on the road, no matter how unattainable this goal is. It's still a goal, and goals are what we all need to strive to achieve to become the best we can be.

I agree. In my line of work you never know who you are talking to. I would always take the time to answer questions and put my best foot forward because I wore a uniform and had advertisements all over the truck. There was one time when I was talking with this guy and it got back to the terminal. He was VP of the company and that's pretty high up there since we were the 7th largest oil company in the world. I'm glad I was in a good mood that day!!!!!

When you're in your truck, you're representing the company. Whatever you do, good or bad, reflects on the company as a whole. If you are rude to a customer or anybody for that matter, that person will judge the whole company base on that particular experience with you. That goes for any industry, not just trucking.

I agree, I am a one truck company. The only thing I have to sell is my service and I try to give the best service I possibly can. I take some loads no one wants without griping and guess what, then I get the good ones too, and I get paid for all of them. I wear nice clean clothes every day and shave each morning. I look the people in the eye and say good morning to them and act like I am in a good mood even if I'm not. It makes a difference. I see too many drivers running around in greasy sweat pants and t-shirts that look like they have not bathed in a week. I keep my truck looking nice too. Look and act like a pro and you will be treated like one.
