What is a good inverter to run a gaming laptop without running truck? I don't have an apu. Would I need a DC to dc converter?

For any sensitive electronics you want a pure sine wave inverter. The cheap ones you see at truck stops are modified sine wave which will ruin batteries in modern electronics such as laptops/tablets/smart phones/ battery operated tools/etc.

Not really. Almost everything is fine with modified sine wave. Sure, if you want to use an induction cooktop it's required, but laptops won't care. The biggest issue with a plug in inverter for a gaming laptop is how much power modern mid tier gaming laptops require. Most are at or above the 180W limit of almost all 12V adapters.

Everything I've read about electronics and my understanding of electricity says otherwise. An easy and relatively cheap test fir this. Get two cheap AA rechargeable battery setups. Charge one set only on clean power at home and charge the other from a modified sine wave inverter. In a relatively short period of time three batteries in the inverter set will drain much faster than the set charged on clean power.
Also to clarify when i said cheap, i wasnt talking about the small plug in inverters. I was using the term in a more general sense. Modified inverters are MUCH cheaper than good quality pure sine wave inverters.Last edited: May 23, 2019

Laptops are rectifying to DC anyway which is why it's not a problem. There are some weird situations where it can cause problems, but my only issue has been the PS4 pro.TROOPER to TRUCKER Thanks this.

Run my gaming laptop off of modified sine wave aswell as my tv and ps4 . Gaming laptop is i7 with 970 never any issues in over 2 yrs .
Dieselboss and TROOPER to TRUCKER Thank this. -
This was interesting.

Funny that this old thread would come up now. I'm currently in the buying stage of building a desktop for my truck. I'm putting everything in a 12 inch tall mini-ITX case with a handle called the Lian-Li TU150. Soon I'll be able to bring a beast machine into the pilot and hold game nights. Really though it's so I can take it home with me more easily on cold nights.

November 5th us PC gamers are finally getting Red Dead Redemption 2.
Had a feeling we would be getting it soon before holidays. Otherwise they would have to compete with Cyberpunk 2077 release next year.. Or wait until later next year, but by then some of the excitement can wear off.
November 5th!Dieselboss Thanks this. -
There are some good prices on prebuilt on Amazon, cheaper than what you can build DIY. I'm about ready for a new rig myself .
