Need new king pins

Yeah, you really need to jack the front axle up and grease or the grease won’t get where it needs to go IMO.

 

Honestly I've never jacked up a steer axle to put grease in. My old man ran off highway primarily and never once did any of his trucks need kingpins in the 5 years he kept them. I figure if grease is coming out between the axle and knuckle, its got lube.

 

I had a Mechanic show Me while changing the spindle. At least on my Truck, no need to jack it up. The grease flows through just fine.

 

I’ll look around, $700 would be worth it to Me. $1300? I’ll be a King Pin changer.

 

Where he operated, the truck and trailer required an inspection I believe every 6 months (and being in Western Canada, it has to be a certified shop and a certified Journeyman mechanic that performs the inspection). If the kingpins were worn badly by the 9th inspection he'd have known about it.

 

When I had to change the spindle. It came with new bushings installed. The old ones still looked good @ aprox 1.2 mil. Truck still has original on the left front. Very little play now @ 2.1 mil. +

 

Everyone is different, that’s just the way I was taught. My Grandpa bought his first truck in the 40’s and my Dad in the 70’s so thought I better listen to how the old timers do it.
