As for the other than honorable discharge, true many companies won't consider you, however Swift is one that will, not the best company, but it is a start, I was kicked out with OTHD as well and was able to get rolling ,I am know longer driving for swift but it got me in the door. I will starting to drive for a private small company with only 7 trucks that still does OTR, Just have to think positive and keep checking.

Your bad discharge will bar you from certain jobs that may require a security clearance.. (I.E. Ammo, explosives hauling, military sensitiveitems.. rifles, commo gear, ect..) It might effect getting a haz mat endorsement or TWIC card.. I'm not sure.. just guessing there..
Everyday freight.. it realy won't effect you too much.. -
Its amazing how the past just lurks in the shadows and returns for his due long after that season is gone

A general is not that bad but there are some employers that served and see anything less than an Honorable as non hiriable. I can't believe that you didn't get a BCD for the AWOL in time of war. If it reads "Under Honorable Conditions" you should be ok but "Less than honorable" might limit you in your job search.
OH! Heck this thread is 1.5 years old!
I wonder how his search is doing? -
I would check your DD214...My mom came down with cancer while I was in the Army and they said she was going to pass away in days, I ASKED to go see her, they said no so I told them I was going to see her and did...When I showed back up, they said sign here, you're gone with a 'less than honorable discharge" however, when I looked at my DD214 it says honorable...

It won't be a problem driver.....................
Unless you want to get into politics.............
then it would most likely be a PLUS !!!!

I have NEVER had an employer ask for my DD214. Honestly, no one will really ask you about it and if you don't mention it, I doubt it will ever come up. No big deal here. I have the same and have never had a problem with a background check, getting Hazmat, gettting into Canada, or anything else for that matter. The military likes to fill you with fear about what will happen if you don't make them happy, but they rarely come true once you are a civilian...

I never had anyone ask for my DD214 except for a gov't job.
It would show up on a hazmat or TWIC background investigation. Just stay away from them and you'll be okay.
But your problem is your 10 year background history. Three years in the brig will raise eyebrows.
Desertion is not on the list of disqualifying events. You have a chance.
Back in the old days they would hang you! -
